Women’s Handbags Getting Lighter Thanks to New Technology

Doctors have long warned us of the dangers of lugging about a heavy handbag. So it’s good news that the trend seems to be shifting; our bags are actually getting lighter. And it seems that it’s all thanks to technology.

Gadget advancements mean that we’re carrying less in our purses. Rather than stashing a laptop inside our tote, these days we’re more likely to carry a tiny Blackberry or iPhone.

A study by British retailer Debenhams says that women today carry an average of 3.3 pounds of weight in their handbags, 57% less than they carried in 2007.

I would definitely say my handbag has got lighter over the past few years thanks to the introduction of lighter gadgets, but like most women I still pack a bag ready for anything,” says the brain behind Ultimo lingerie, Michelle Mone.

No wonder we’re seeing a shift towards smaller handbags in 2010. There’s no point carrying around an oversized purse with nothing much inside it, is there?
