Hermes Breeds Their Own Crocodiles for Handbags | Reptile Farm in Australia

48 sec read

As far as do-it-yourself projects go, this one takes the cake for me. Luxury brand Hermes has recently revealed their plans to breed crocodiles to keep up with their overwhelming handbag demand.

It’s slightly conflicting news since we just learned of the company’s recent postponing of store openings because of financial struggles. However, along with that information, we also learned that their leather-goods division hasn’t been dealing with the same problems and cutbacks as other areas of Hermes. I’d say that’s fairly apparent by this news.

Their famous (or infamous, in some opinions) classic crocodile-skin handbags are flying off the shelves faster than they can produce them. Hermes Joint Chief Executive Officer Patrick Thomas recently discussed the matter when revealing the brand’s big plans:

We are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia. The world is not full of crocodiles, except the stock exchange. We cannot face demand. We have massive over-demand. We are limited by our ability to train new craftsmen.”

Considering the fact that it takes multiple crocs and tons of breeding cost to make only one bag, I guess it could end up being a smart business choice for the company. It’s an interesting one, to say the least. I can only imagine what animal-rights group PETA has to say about this one.
