Australian Firefighters Rescue Clutch Purse | Waste of Resources, or Simply a Good Deed?

Australian firefighters saved a young woman from a major fashion disaster this weekend. The men went to extreme measures to rescue a clutch purse dropped down a drain in the Northern Territory capital of Darwin.

The six firefighters tore up part of the Peel Street walkway to retrieve the woman’s beloved purse.

Darwin Fire Watch Commander David Letheby said the unusual rescue mission was all in a day’s work.

It was a community service,” he explained. “They were available for any emergency – they were just helping out … we get calls for all these sorts of things day-in and day-out.”

But locals are less impressed by the handbag heroics.

The girl should be ashamed of herself,” said one witness. “It was an abuse of resources. I can’t imagine why they came at all.”

Personally, if the firefighters are happy to help I can’t see why it’s anyone else’s concern. I’m thrilled to know there are fireman out there who appreciate the value of a good clutch purse!
