As the dust settles on Christmas, chances are that you’re feeling a spot of shopper’s remorse. And if you don’t now, just wait until you receive your next credit card statement.

Research from Synovate confirms that many shoppers get an attack of the guilts when spending money on luxuries like designer handbags and fashion items. The Brits were one of the most remorseful mobs, with two-thirds of women feeling bad after a splurge.

It’s a classic case of British guilt. It’s seen as much more acceptable to buy something ‘needed’ for the home than it is to indulge yourself in any way,” explained Jill Telford, Synovate’s CEO for the UK.

There were roughly as many guilty luxury lovers in the United States. Much happier with a little self indulgence were the Indians, Dutch, and Brazilians. Most of these folks savored the opportunity to spoil themselves.

And unsurprisingly, the research also showed men around the globe feel less guilty about luxury purchases than women. I could have told you that one without an international survey!
