New Zealand Luggage Brand Rodd & Gunn Creates Expensive $55, 000 Crocodile Suitcase Set

Kiwi luggage brand Rodd & Gunn has created a $55, 000 crocodile leather suitcase set. At that price, the two-piece set is the most expensive pair of travel bags ever made in New Zealand.

It took 150 hours to design and handcraft the handbags, so it’s not surprising that there is only one set available. That’s about as limited edition as they come!

The prices are steep, particularly when compared to the brand’s regular suitcases which retails between $600 and $900. But the cost of this handcrafted limited edition crocodile leather luggage is not unheard of by American and European standards. Yet Rodd & Gunn managing director Mike Beagley says he’s unsure who will buy such an expensive bag sets.

I’ll be surprised by who does buy it,” Mike Beagley said. “I think it will be a hereditary piece that someone will buy and hand down to their children, and then their children’s children. It has a lifetime guarantee so it will be a family heirloom.”

Perhaps the owner will be a wealthy traveler, as the bags will take pride of place in the label’s new Sydney Airport.

If it doesn’t sell within a month, we’ll move it to another store,” Mr Beagley said. “If it doesn’t sell there, I guess I’ll have two great pieces of croc luggage to add to my collection.”
