Project Chol Chol is a fashion program which brings the stylish fashion goods of the Mapuche people of South America to the rest of the world. Through the line, known as Mapuche Modern, the initiative offers handbags, belts, scarves, and other style items made with traditional weaving techniques.
The artisans from Argentina and Chile work under the guidance of San Francisco based designer Jasmine Aarons. She ensures the pieces combine South African tribal influences with fashion forward flair.
All Mapuche Modern fashion items are made from locally sourced wool, so they’re 100 percent sustainable. The women also work under fair trade conditions to support their families and communities.
Project Chol Chol aims to make its Mapuche Modern fashions available through selected vendors in 2011. Profits will benefit the Mapuche women and the Chol Chol Foundation, an American non-profit group which promotes the economic and social development of the South American communities.
