I found the last Miu Miu bag I reviewed to be terribly designed and of poor taste. The fabulousness of this Matelasse tote just proves my point about the line’s inconsistency, because this bag is as amazing as the last one was awful.
The gray matelasse leather has an amazing quilted look that is geometrically complicated, but soft at the same time. The waxed treatment on the leather gives it a great sheen, and keeps it protected from the elements. The color of this bag is really startling, because it’s one of those rich, purple grays that looks super multi-faceted.
The complex design of this bag is kept in check by its lack of embellishment. The only real details, other than the amazing material, are the clasps, which are, themselves amazing. The fold-over flap is kept in place by an oversized clasp. I love how the hard lines of the clasp contrast with the overall softness of the bag. The front pleated pockets give more volume to the bag, adding to its balloon-y shape, and are also practical.
The only drawback of the bag is the price. For $2,050, this gorgeous bag is just out of reach for many of us. But don’t worry, there will always be knock-offs!
