Matelasse is a kind of quilting that you usually find in textiles, but Miu Miu has used it here in an entirely innovative, not to mention beautiful way. The quilted leather has been sewn together in a sort of zig-zag pattern that shows off the sheen of the material, and gives it sort of a metallic look.
The simple, classic shape of the bag allows the complexity of the pattern to show through, and is the perfect size for a night on the town. The turnlock clasp on the front flap closure is decorated with rhinestones. Ordinarily, rhinestones on such a quietly elegant bag might be an eyesore, but their delicate art deco pattern just enhances the sophistication of the bag.
The jeweled strap catches the light in the most magnificent way, and luckily, it’s removable and wearable. So, if you want to carry the bag as a clutch, you can still wear the strap as a necklace. Seriously, why don’t all high-end evening bags come with this option? It’s a great idea that I hope we’ll be seeing more of.
At $1,450, the Matelasse is definitely an investment, but one I think is worthwhile for a woman with style (and a little cash) to burn.
