You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can evidently teach a designer to alter its creative vision. If it were in a line-up I never would have picked this Long Beach shoulder bag as a M. Andonia accessory.
I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about M. Andonia to be honest. But here it’s stripped back its trademark graphics, ditched its usual synthetic for high-class leather, and added a few fashion forward features. The result isn’t perfect, but it’s a lot more wearable than most M. Andonia purses.
My biggest problem comes with those on-trend accents. The red leather finish and quirky shape are eye-catching, but with the studs and tassels it seems the Long Beach is trying too hard to fit in. Like the clueless kid in high school, it seems this purse isn’t sure whether it wants to hang with the hippie chicks or the biker dudes; it just wants desperately be accepted.
It’s a bit try-hard, but in this handbag I’ve seen a new potential in M. Andonia. I’ve never been a huge fan, but perhaps we’ll see great things from this designer in a few collections. Right now though, I’d hesitate to spend $315 on this baby. Without a clear style statement, or even an interior lining, I can’t quite see the value here.
