Women Spend Up Big on Purses, Still Suffer Handbag Envy

If you turn green with envy the moment a woman carrying a designer bag crosses your path, you're not alone. New studies show more than half of all women suffer from "handbag envy" when they spot a purse more lovely than their own.

The research also shows that we don't mind spending up to get a bag that's better than the rest. A woman will own an average of 17 handbags in her lifetime, and spend an average of £4,090 to do it.

Those bags typically include five day bags, three evening purses, two office bags, and two shoppers. Most of us also have a couple of sports bags, some travel totes, and a beach bag in our collection.

"It's always been said that women have a love of handbags and this research proves that," explained a research spokesperson. "But it seems it's important for girls to have a bag for every occasion, and even for every outfit, to make sure they are always co-ordinated."
