Proverbial Wallets Control Spending | New Tech Purses React to Bank Accounts

44 sec read

With Christmas just around the corner, most of us are starting to get nervous about our next credit card bill. If you’re too reliant on the fantastic plastic, a Proverbial Wallet may be ideal for you.

These high-tech billfold purses connect via Bluetooth to a smartphone which keeps an eye on your bank account levels, and reacts accordingly. The Peacock shrinks and inflates according to the amount of cash in your account. The Bumblebee vibrates whenever you make a transaction. And if you really need a lesson in impulse control, look to the Mother Bear. Its constricting hinge becomes harder to open as you come closer to your monthly budget!

The designers from the MIT Media Lab say their new Proverbial Wallets look to get us back in touch with our spending habits. When we had to count out notes and coins, we were much more aware of what was going in, and what was going out. Nowadays though, we can easily spend hundreds or even thousands with just the swipe of a card. Spending a hundred dollars feels just the same as spending one, and therein lies the problem.

This is new technology so it’s not available in stores yet, but hopefully a fashion house develops it soon!
