MCM Launches American Comeback with New York Luggage and Handbags Boutique

Posted on: Mar 12

MCM were one of the must-have brands in the 1980s, but they've been absent from the American fashion scene for a number of years. Now the accessories label is launching a comeback starting with a brand new store at The Plaza in New York City.

The brand left the United States in a shroud of secrecy due to problems with their previous owner Michael Cromer. But it continued to thrive in Europe and Asia, feeding the luggage and handbag habits of jet-setting supermodels and celebs.

Now MCM is back with a new moniker and a new head honcho. Previously known as Michael Cromer Munich, MCM will now stand for Mode Creation Munich. One of Asia's most powerful businesswomen Sung-Joo Kim, is at the helm to keep things running smoothly.

MCM's New York store is their first American outlet in decades. You can find it at the corner of 58th and Fifth Avenue. Remember to keep your eyes peeled while you're there. With recent shoppers including Heidi Klum and Ivanka Trump, you never know who you'll run into!

We had an MCM “speedy” type bag in our Dress for Success boutique. The leather tab inside said Made in Italy. Any previous MCM bags we have had said Made in Germany. We are wondering if the vintage Made in Italy bag is authentic. Could you tell us if they were ever made in Italy? We appreciate any help you can give us.

Hi JoAnn. That’s a good question. In the past MCM were operating out of Germany, but since the takeover I know they’re not producing the bags there any more. As to whether they’re making the bags in Italy, I’m really not sure. I read somewhere that many were being made in Korea, but that doesn’t mean they all are. the MCM website and other reputable retailers like Bloomingdale’s don’t say where the bags are made, so the jury’s still out. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
