Taiwan-born Linda Wong has combined her love of the planet and fashion in her handbag label, Canopy Verde. The brand offers practical, environmentally friendly, and stylish purses.

The label was a labor of love for the new mom, in more ways than one. In fact, Linda was finalizing details of her website launch while in labor with her first son Will!

Canopy Verde's extensive collection features bags of all shapes and sizes. The cute Pomelo and Calamint clutches are ideal for casual evenings out. The oversized Dewberry tote is perfect for moms with its bottle holders and easy-clean lining. The Cassia is the granddaddy of the bunch, with its expansive interior ready for weekend getaways.

Financial crisis? What financial crisis? That's the attitude of Harvey Nichols customers, who are still happy to fork out the big bucks for luxury handbags.

A representative from the retail chain's Knightsbridge store said one customer recently parted with £15, 000 for a hand-made alligator leather purse from American designer Lana Marks. The sale of the multicolored Positano handbag shows some shoppers are still prepared to splash their cash around.

But Hillary Vallieres, a spokeswoman for the store, says luxury lovers are rejecting signature prints and other heavily branded bags for more subtle designs. She explains that Lana Marks is "in the category of discreet luxury; it doesn't have a screaming label as other big brands do. A lot of customers are considering having less ostentatious labels, especially given the current recession."

Many of the store's high-end customers are wealthy jetsetters, adds personal shopping manager Rebecca Saville. She explained that the weaker pound has enticed shoppers from Asia and the rest of Europe.

The handbag market exceeded £500 million in the United Kingdom for the first time last year, but market researcher Mintel still predicts a slump due to the recession.

Jessica Simpson is sometimes hit or miss with me. There aren't many of the brand's styles that I absolutely detest, but I'm not always in love with them either. This Jimmy satchel takes a turn for the better as far as my opinion goes.

Yet again, you can't expect anything even remotely close to real croc leather or something that's a superb imitation when you're paying Jessica Simpson prices. This satchel is only $108, so there's no mistaking it for the real deal. However, people paying in this price range wouldn't expect it and probably wouldn't be disappointed by what they get.

With this interesting patchwork of faux croc textures and colors, I'm not particularly distracted by the fake material, though. The mix of neutral browns with a pop of this season's trendy purple color is very appealing to the eye. The colors work well together to create a versatile handbag despite the fact that purple is anything but a neutral by most standards.

What stood out to me as missing on this bag is the signature Jessica Simpson cursive logo sewn on the bottom panel. What's there in place of it is a J-shaped piece of hardware that actually functions as the Jimmy satchel's clasp closure. It was unexpected to me and quite clever. If I didn't know that this is a Jessica Simpson design, I probably wouldn't have ever noticed that it is shaped like the letter. Kudos to the brand for a little originality.

For the past century, Halston has been on the forefront of refined elegance. They've dressed some of the most rich, famous, and fabulous women in history, and while the popularity of the label has waxed and waned, the quality of their designs never has.

To be honest, I'm a bit surprised by the eye-popping color of this clutch, and also by the plastic-y, excuse me, "plexi" closure. Not because Halston never veers from their particular brand of understated luxury, but because they've incorporated a major trend (neon) and a retro cliché (plexi) and pulled it off with panache.

The color of the clutch is a little off of your usual neon, which takes it away from that played out 80's look and puts it in a retro class of its own. And the more minty green of the logo closure clashes in a way that seems just perfect, and totally 70's. I also really dig how the shape of the logo plate mimics the overall shape of the clutch. It's a geometric dream.

Under the flap, you'll find a zippered pocket and neon green patent trim. Plus, the whole top of the bag opens up to one big pocket, so you can use this bag a lot of different ways. It would add the perfect punch to a slinky LBD or mismatch beautifully with a Pucci print dress.

The first thing you'll notice is that soft, supple leather. The buttery soft calfskin is available in a range of colors, from conservative black and brandy brown to fresh mint green and laguna blue. I'm not sure about the horseshoes, but they might bring you good luck!

Pop open the magnetic snap to reveal the luxuriously large interior space. Spacious purses can often become unmanageable, but not this one. The most challenging part is remembering where you've put that ringing cell phone!

Oh Marc Jacobs, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: Rana Clutch with the gilded frog, Big Heart Clutch with the cut and paste confections, and now this, the terribly cute pastel Big Slice Clutch.

With its watermelon slice shape and gently gathered leather, the Big Slice is less kitschy than its frog and heart-adorned cousins. The supple, smooth leather is sophisticated, and the color is a couple of shades below eye-popping, making the Big Slice very wearable, er, carryable.

For me, this is the perfect seasonal transition accessory. It will add a spark of color to the last of your winter wardrobe staples, and will complement the lighter shades of spring beautifully. At 11" x 7" x 1", it is the perfect size for not carrying too much around with you on the longer days ahead.

I love the thickness of the wrist handle, and the way it is shaped to hug your skin. So many wrist handles just dig in or fall right off, but you won't have that problem with the Big Slice. The turnlock closure adds a little silver detail to the center of the bag, and the flap top opens to a front pouch pocket. The main compartment has internal pockets, as well, so for a wee little bag, the Big Slice packs an organizational wallop.

I could go on about the feature of the Big Slice, but what I really want to say is: this bag is just too cute. It reminds me of 1984 so much that I can hear Van Halen in my head. It's so versatile that it's the perfect clutch to take to a tea party, or for stowing those cigarettes you stole from mom.

Maybe it's a little early, but all the retail signs of spring are here: the resort collections are starting to show up in stores, last year's models of everything are on sale, and pastels are everywhere. Okay, well, maybe not everywhere. I, for one, am still fully engaged in my all-black winter wardrobe program, but I am thinking ahead to the moment when the knee high boots are replaced with strappy sandals.

And in that thinking, I have come across what may become one of spring's most perfect pastel accessories: the Marc by Marc Jacobs Dot Bowler Bag. It has all the cute I want out of a spring fling, without getting saccharine about it. I love the rounded update of the traditional bowler shape, and the way the soft, supple leather enhances it. The pleating is a genius detail that gives the Dot an almost hobo softness, but the structural design keeps the handbag in line.

The mint green is delicate and lovely, and will complement spring shades beautifully. Or, if you want it right now, it would be a great way to add a soft pinch of color to your own dark winter palette. I love the crinkly texture of the leather and the way that the Dot's overall softness is balanced by the classic shape and shiny silver hardware. 

The dual straps fasten to the sides of the main compartment with adorable oversized buttons. There is a front compartment with the visible turnlock closure. The flap top covers the front pocket and the zipped main compartment. The 7" x 11" x 14" size shows that this season's oversized trend isn't abating, and women will be carrying luggage-sized accessories for at least one more season.

Soft, pastel, oversized, and classic, the Dot has a lot going for it. I just can't wait for the weather to match its bright, optimistic mood!
