Coco Chanel Coins Commemorate Handbag Designer’s Birth

Master handbag designer Karl Lagerfield has created a set of collector coins to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Coco Chanel's birth.

The coins are stamped with an iconic image of Coco Chanel wearing her trademark flat bow hat. Her classic profile is bordered by the name Coco and a chic string of pearls. The coin's flipside features Chanel’s signature quilted pattern, the very same one featured on its most famous purses.

Four unique coins will be minted, two in silver and two in gold. Each will come in a denomination of five euros, as a tribute to Chanel's signature No. 5 scent. Of course, you'll pay a lot more than that for the the privilege of owning one. The five-ounce gold coins will sell for a whopping 5,900 euros or $7,450! For that price, I'd much rather buy a Chanel handbag or two!

The 99 gold coins and 11, 000 silver ones will be available from December 1.
