Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion Pays Tribute to Classic 2.55 Handbag in New York’s Central Park

The Chanel Mobile Art pavilion has landed. Appearing more like a futuristic space ship than a homage to the acclaimed designer’s handbags, the traveling exhibition will open in New York’s Central Park on Monday.

The project is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Chanel’s iconic 2.55 handbag. 18 modern artists, including Yoko Ono, Blue Noses, Sylvia Fleury, and Lee Bul, have contributed works inspired by this classic quilted purse.

The space-age pavilion is the work of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. Her revolutionary spiral design was a deliberate attempt to create unity in a dream-like environment.

You start where you begin, you begin where you end and move from one space to another. It sounds light, like you’re just going to float it around and land it somewhere, but it’s very complicated,” she explained.

The Chanel Mobile Art pavilion will be in Central Park until November 9. Tickets are free, although all presale tickets are sold out. But don’t despair! Limited tickets will be sold daily from the on-site box office.
