Versace has sort of ebbed and flowed since Donatella took over in 2000 or so. Lately, she seems to be kicking it up a notch, and the results are cutting edge, but still classic Versace. This Baroque quilted leather tote is a great example of her personal design genius.
The Baroque is a flap over top style satchel with not many design variations at its foundation. That’s awesome, because it happens to be a very streamlined and usable style. I really dig the metal attachments of the top handle. They give the bag an architectural edge that contrasts well with the curved shaping of the rest of the bag.
The quilting on the Baroque is the most interesting quilting I’ve ever seen. It’s a bit irregular, and all the patches are pyramid or triangle shaped, which gives the effect of studding. Basically, it looks as though the bag is made of studded instead of quilted leather. The angular edges reinforce this beautiful illusion. The only thing I don’t love about the Baroque is the somewhat ostentatious metal closure, but I guess it’s these little over-the-top touches that make the bag live up to its name.
All in all, the Baroque is a crazy cool bag with a serious designer price tag. At $2,750 it’s luxury to aspire to.
