The Valentino accessories line has been covered in florals for the past few seasons. Sometimes this has been amazing, and sometimes lackluster. I’m afraid this sequined rosette tote is of the former persuasion.
The gray leather is very on trend, and the color is rich and luxurious. Even the rosettes are interesting and well-placed in varying sizes on the surface of the bag. It’s the sequins that are killing me. Sequins! On such an elegant bag. Why, Valentino, why?
The simple shape of the tote is meant to show off the detail of the material. Ordinarily, I love this design approach, but on this bag, I wish there were slightly more design and a truckload less embellishment. The clean lines of the bag, in this case, merely emphasize the tackiness of the sequined flowers.
There’s also the not-so-small problem of the very obvious logo at the center of the bag. It looks so out of place in this field of unwieldy blossoms, it just makes things worse.
And what price do you pay for carrying this tacky, supposedly “romantic” monstrosity? Why, $2,500. Ouch. It’s only worth it if you happen to be willing to cut off all those terrible sequins, and even then, I’m not sure.
