Susan Farber upsizes her Laurel clutch with this Hastings shoulder bag.
The Hastings has everything we loved about the Laurel. The soft ruffled leather, with its zippered edge, is an intriguing mix of sugar and spice. The gently braided strap is a great complement to those elements we first fell for. And all that extra space won’t go astray.
I’m a bit torn about the drawstring closure though. The gathers that this clasp creates are ideal for emphasizing the quality of this buttery leather. But it’s not very practical. It’s fiddly to use, and not very secure. I’m just not sure whether the look is compelling enough to justify those little niggles.
The lack of protective feet is another small disappointment. The platform base seems to be calling out for something to save it once it’s set down. You can try to treat it gently, but I’ll be surprised if you don’t see some scuffs after a few seasons.
I appreciate the extra room the Hastings affords us, but I’m not sure Susan Farber has done enough to support it here.
