Proenza Schouler does the utilitarian look well, but in time all of its handbags start to appear the same. So I’m thrilled to see the label step out of the box with this Mochila satchel.
Don’t get me wrong; this patterned bag doesn’t hold a candle to all those PS1s we’ve drooled over for so many years. But it is refreshing to see a satchel that walks a bit differently. Its clean lines help Proenza Schouler pull off the ambitious Aztec print that decorates the red fabric exterior.
The black leather logo plate disrupts the Mochila’s looks, but it’s not as ostentatious as many similar labels. It’ll also please those girls who still love to advertise who they’re carrying over their shoulder.
The Mochila’s dimensions are generous, so happily we don’t have to leave anything we really want behind. Unhappily though, Proenza Schouler hasn’t really thought about what a big bag needs. A big bag needs plenty of pockets, not the single zippered pouch we get here. And it needs a substantial strap to take its weight, rather than the skinny Minnie we get here.
Gripes aside, this Proenza Schouler bag is relatively affordable at $225. If you’ve always hoped to own a piece of the label, this satchel might be your chance.
