Nancy Gonzalez has a veritable monopoly on exotic-skinned minimalist accessories. This floral applique clutch is a dramatic departure from her usually straightforward aesthetic, and honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about it.
The pink pastel crocodile skin is itself, a pretty dramatic statement. I’ve never really seen crocodile done in pastel, but I don’t think it’s a look that I want to see repeated. The color just isn’t rich enough to bring out all the natural nuances in the crocodile’s texture.
The floral appliques are interesting enough, but honestly, I think the designer could have saved us all a couple of hundred dollars by using cow leather to make them. Once the skin has been quilted and patterned, it’s pretty difficult to tell what kind of hide it is.
Usually, Gonzalez makes simple bags that allow the quality of her materials to show through. The complexity of this one detracts from the organic beauty of the crocodile skin, and makes it look kind of cheap and cheesy. $2,050 is just too much to pay for a bag of questionable taste, even if the materials and craftsmanship are both exquisite.
