Most fashion houses have a clear design vision, but Maxx New York’s accessories are much more eclectic than that. I never know what I’m going to get, and that’s not always a good thing. The label’s Spencer Chain Hobo is yet another bag which leaves me scratching my head.
I just can’t figure out what Maxx New York was aiming for here. The Spencer is a hobo, but it bears little resemblance to the slouchy boho-chic purses favored by today’s flower children. Its shape is more like a satchel, and while the material is soft it’s not exactly slouchy. The nylon body has a sporty look; it’s just the kind of fabric I’d expect to see on a gym bag. But then Maxx New York takes the Spencer in another, more sophisticated direction with the addition of rich gold chain handles.
Needless to say, I’m confused, but at least the Spencer makes good inside. It’s generously sized, with a plethora of synthetic trimmed pockets to boot. If anything it’s too big for everyday use, but packrats won’t mind those enormous dimensions one bit.
What a shame the Spencer’s looks let it down. At $158 it’s reasonably priced, but it just doesn’t make a clear enough style statement for me.
