Marc Jacobs is one designer that is not afraid of reinvention. Here he reprises his iconic Stam bag with the punchy twist of Swavorski-studded quilting. The result is sparkly and ladylike, and Marc Jacobs all over.
The material of the Stam Swarovski Shoulder Bag gives a trompe l’oeil quilted impression created by the combination of leather and crystals. The stitching in between the crystal patches gives the exterior an unusual texture and depth.
While I think the feminine Stam shape is simple and classic enough to pull off the bling, there’s something a little overdesigned about this bag that turns me off. I usually love the addition of a chain strap, but it’s so shiny and gold that it looks a bit cheap up against the crystals.
Other than the over-embellishment, I can find little fault with the Stam Swarovski bag. It has two conveniently located exterior zipper pockets, and the dual rolled leather handles are comfortable with a 5″ drop. The sturdy frame top closes with an understated gold clasp.
Despite my personal reticence over the sparkle of the bag, I think it’s a great one for making the day-to-night transition. I can see that, for a woman who can pull of all this bling, it would work at the office, and all that glitter will bring it seamlessly into the evening.
