Lately, I’ve been really into Judith Leiber’s tongue-in-cheek designs. I think the line has a real sense of humor, which is more than you can say for a lot of fashion out there. But this Dachshund clutch takes it a bit over the line, I think, and veers into kind of tasteless territory.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big dog fan. In fact, I love the bizarrely shaped dachshund. But I’m not really sure I want to carry an even more miniature version of this dog around as a handbag, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.
The quality of the craftsmanship is typical Judith Leiber. The dog is rendered in realistic detail and sparkles beautifully. It’s just that it looks a little bit like an accessory that only a super obsessed dachshund fan will love. All the elegance of the Leiber line disappears into a funny, but not terribly sophisticated icon.
If you happen to be a major dachshund fan, you could buy about a million screen-printed dog totes for the price of this clutch. At $5,795, I’m afraid that only collectors of these bags or wealthy women with quirky senses of humor are going to find this bag buyable.
