Like so many of her designs, Diane von Furstenberg’s Philomena clutch has become a bohemian classic. The pared down shape of the bag is always combined with exotic and inventive materials that take it to a new level of style. This studded snake print version is my favorite to date.
The pale metallic leather on the Philomena showcases the intricate texture of the snake print. I love the way the color fades from silver to gold and back again. Because the color is so light, it makes the Philomena seem less pretentious than a brighter color might, but it is utterly striking nonetheless. The snake scale studs add a bit of bling, but their flatness keeps them from taking the bag over the top.
The fold over design of the Philomena is so sweet and classic, it could make almost any material look great, but it does especially well with exotically-textured materials like this one. The overall look is both edgy and sophisticated, so it would work well with a lot of evening ensembles, from cocktail dresses to acid wash jeans.
At $425, the Philomena is nicely priced, but not ridiculously so. This level of quality, after all, costs money.
