Metallic bags have come and gone over the past few seasons. Very few have caught and held my eye. But Bottega Veneta’s combination of metallic and snakeskin is really winning me over here.
Honestly, I think it’s the color that’s doing it more than anything else. Anthracite, which is just a fancy name for gray, comes alive with a metallic finish. And the snakeskin adds an amazing texture and depth to a a bag that would be a little ho-hum without it.
The shape of this bag is also really interesting. It’s really a balloon bag with a drawstring attached, which I have never seen done in snakeskin. I might have worried that the amazing finish of the skin would be lost on such a slouchy bag, but it isn’t. The whole thing comes together amazingly well.
The slim, adjustable strap is a little slimmer than what I usually like on a bag of this size, but in this case I think it’s purposeful. You might be tempted to fill a leather bag of this size to overflowing, which is something you simply cannot do with snakeskin. It’s just too delicate. Which makes the strap understandable and even commendable. Plus, it adds a delicate touch to a totally boho bag.
Although I really like this bag, I’m not sure about the $4,500 price tag. Not that it isn’t reasonable for an exotic; it certainly is. It’s just that I think the style is a little too of-the-moment to pay that much for.
