Bebe revamps the classic quilted flap bag with this curiously named Denim Darling.
I say it’s curious because this darling isn’t made from denim at all, but polyurethane. In this black shade it doesn’t even try to pretend to be denim, which only makes the moniker more puzzling. Still whatever it’s called, the Denim Darling is quite cute. Diamond-shaped quilting is a time-honored finish, but it’s made a bit more glamorous with the addition of tiny rhinestones. Polyurethane and rhinestones are no substitute for leather and diamonds of course, but for $48.99 it’s a compromise most of us will willingly make.
I really wish Bebe had stopped them, but as is characteristic of the brand it just pushes things a bit too far. The tassel seems to unnecessarily clutter the design, as does the heart-shaped mirror charm. I wouldn’t have minded the unusual woven chain with their comfy shoulder cushion on another bag, but here it seems a bit heavy and clunky.
It might be cheap and cheerful, but Bebe adds enough features to impress me. Metal studs on the base help to protect the synthetic, and while the interior is on the small side it’s got enough pockets to keep clutter at bay.
It’s not the most luxurious bag on the market, but for this price the Denim Darling could be a fun addition to your wardrobe.
