O’Neill Courtney Shoulder Bag | Large Gray Studded Synthetic Handbag

O'Neill Courtney SatchelIn recent years we’ve seen O’Neill evolving from a casual surf brand to a fashion label for all seasons. When once it exclusively produced beach bags, today it makes bags like the Courtney that can work all year round. I appreciate the label’s move towards more fashion forward styles, but sadly I don’t think the Courtney is one of its best.

It’s almost as if O’Neill decided it wanted to make a bag with studs and forgot about the rest. The pyramid studs aren’t bad. They’re a bit chunky for my taste, but they’re applied with restraint in a band towards the base. However the rest of the bag is frankly a bit blah.

The dark gray synthetic isn’t a bad leather substitute. It won’t fool any fashionistas, but happily it doesn’t have that telltale sheen we see on many synthetics. Sadly though, it’s also ultimately forgettable. So too is the shape, which while serviceable doesn’t exactly excite me.

The interior is also disappointing. While it’s luxuriously large, its single zippered pocket isn’t enough. This bag will require regular clean outs to keep the clutter at bay.

But it is very cheap at $44. And that affordable bottom line may be enough to convince stud lovers.
