New York designer Gail Riggs has collaborated with the Susan B. Anthony House on a limited edition replica of the feminist icon’s favorite alligator handbag.
Called the Miss Anthony, the synthetic alligator embossed bag from the designer’s Abigail Riggs collection is more than just a fashion statement. It serves as a reminder of how far women have come since suffragette leader Susan B. Anthony fought for women’s rights in the 19th century. Remember that Susan B. Anthony carried her luxury purse at a time when married women couldn’t open their own bank accounts, or even claim their own wages. No wonder Anthony never tied the knot!
The Miss Anthony purse’s creation represents a shift for Gail Riggs, who’d previously worked exclusively on one-of-a-kind purses. It seems she’s gotten a taste for creating bags inspired by powerful women though, as her next project is an Annie Oakley handbag! No wonder she says every bag she creates is meant to empower the woman that carries it.
Just so we don’t forget all that Susan B. Anthony did, every $250 Miss Anthony purse is packaged with a DVD about Susan B. Anthony House and six-month’s membership to the museum.
