Dooney & Bourke Tartan Erica Sac | Canvas Hobo Bag with Leather and Suede Trim

Tartan might not be a look that suits everyone's taste, but I happen to love this checkered fabric when it is done well. It's not a fabric pattern that you want to include in every outfit you wear, unless you're part of a Scottish clan; however, it's a fun addition to a wardrobe, especially for accessories.

Since we're now nearly into September, I thought it appropriate to look at a bag in this checked-cloth. Although it's not exclusively a fall and winter style, I think most people tend to wear it during the cooler seasons. It's just one of those fabrics that calls to mind winter hats, cashmere scarves, and mittens.

Dooney & Bourke obviously had that in mind when creating the Tartan Erica Sac. Although the print is on a season-less cotton canvas, it's the touches of suede trim that clue you in to when you would most likely carry this handbag. The bit of brown suede along the bottom and on the top corners is just enough to set off the multi-colored checks yet not distract the eye from the main focus.

With its large hobo shape, the Erica offers enough space for everyday necessities plus a few extra items. One great organizational feature, which I always appreciate in a purse, is the center zippered divider for storing those valuables you need to keep safe but get to easily. A few other pockets add to the amount of available storage, including a pocket specifically for your cell phone.

For $130, the Tartan Erica hobo might not take you through every season of the year, but it will get you through fall and winter quite fashionably.

Tommy Hilfiger Explorer Duffle | Striped Denim Weekend Bag with Nautical Feel

Everyone needs a good weekend bag. Even if you don't travel on a regular basis, it's still important to have at least one mid-sized duffle with space to fit everything you need for a few days away from home.

One of the great things about this Tommy Hilfiger Explorer duffle bag is that it could work for either a man or a woman. Though I'm sure there are some women who would scoff at carrying a blue and white striped tote, there is really nothing decidedly masculine about this bag.

It is probably best described simply as a nautical-inspired duffle bag. It's nothing quite as overt in style as something like the Dooney & Bourke DB Sport Duck Tote, which has water-loving animals actually printed right on the bag. The Explorer, with its ticking stripe and dark brown trim, merely hints at that classic vacation-in-the-Hamptons look that Tommy Hilfiger often imbues into their creations so well.

That aforementioned dark brown trim is made from shrunken oil leather and outlines the top and bottom of the bag as well as connecting up the sides to the handles. Those two little straps are hardly convenient when carrying this size of duffle, though. The longer detachable strap makes toting the Explorer a less trying task and will suit you much better for quick runs through the airport.

B. Makowsky Canterbury Haircalf Tote | Leather Handbag with Animal-Print Pony Hair Inset

Well, I can't really beat around the bush on this one, so I'll just come right out with my first impression of the Canterbury Haircalf Tote. Basically, it combines two of my least favorite fashion details: animal print and furry texture. The two aren't exclusively abhorrent to me, but I tend to dislike them when they're together.

Although I'm usually a fan of B. Makowsky handbags, this one really caught me off guard. It's not that there aren't any redeeming qualities about this tote; I just have a hard time getting past the obvious features of it. I'm sure there are many women who love the western-inspired look that haircalf provides, but I've never been on board with the trend. Perhaps I just feel that, as a native Texan, it would be seen as a tad cliché for me to wear.

That being said, there are a few admirable attributes of the Canterbury. First, it's not completely covered in pony hair. That detail is confined to the front insert of the handbag. Also, the shape of the tote is attractive and somewhat contemporary.

As you'd expect from the brand, the Canterbury has bold metallic hardware that catches the eye. For animal-print lovers who can't get enough, the interior is lined in B. Makowsky's signature leopard print lining. This tote definitely won't get PETA's seal of approval, but it will definitely interest gals who like a little western style.

Dooney & Bourke Juliette Bag in Zebra | Classic Satchel with Animal Print Leather

Animal print isn't completely unexpected from Dooney & Bourke, but it does tend to catch me off guard a bit when I see it. I'm rather used to seeing the brand's signature logo. However, when D&B does handbags in leopard or another exotic print, they do it well.

This particular Juliette handbag is from their much-loved zebra collection. The look is quite overwhelming and anything but subtle. It's definitely meant to attract attention, but I'm guessing that anyone who loves this look won't have a problem with that.

Animal print aside, the Juliette is a great mid-sized satchel. Though I'm not sure I would recommend wearing zebra to the office, you could fit plenty of paperwork and even a small laptop in this bag. I can imagine even more uses for it as a travel tote.

A platform bottom makes it convenient for setting down without worrying about your valuables tumbling over. The double rolled leather handles are fairly practical, but it's the longer shoulder strap that seems even more handy for the average day.

Don't worry if a zebra-printed satchel isn't your usual bag of choice. This Juliette bag also comes in a perfectly subtle black leather with tan trim.

Co-Founder of Dooney & Bourke Found Guilty of Conspiracy and Other Charges

The fashion world is no stranger to scandal. Though the topic usually has something to do with tax evasion or other financial mischief, every so often we get something juicier.

The difference with this particular scandal is that, while it involves a fashion executive, it has nothing to do with the inner-workings of the company. A jury recently found Dooney & Bourke co-founder Frederic Bourke guilty of "conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the travel act and making false statements to federal law-enforcement officials." 

These interesting charges have to do with a bribery scheme involving government officials in Azerbaijan, a small country near Iran. The case goes back quite awhile, though, as the scheme that Bourke was allegedly aware of took place in the late 1990s.

Somehow I think that this controversy isn't going to permanently scar the reputation of D&B. In fact, I'll bet that most fans of the label won't even blink about this since we're not talking about a creative director or well-known figurehead.

That's good new for Dooney & Bourke. It might not help Frederic Bourke at all, but at least the company he co-founded won't suffer for his mistakes.

Kate Spade Fairchild Gardens Tote | Floral Printed Canvas and Leather Tote

The full name of this Kate Spade tote is quite a mouthful: the Happy Birthday Quinn Fairchild Gardens tote. I can't even begin to understand the meaning of the title, which is why, for the sake of space and not causing confusion, we'll just call it the Fairchild Gardens tote for this review.

As sometimes printed canvas bags can appear, the flowers on this purse seemed to have been hand painted directly on the material. It definitely gives it that artisan look that I like so much.

Though the Fairchild Gardens might be most appropriate for spring, I think it would still be a stylish choice for the summer season as well. With its sunny yellow blooms, it's like carrying a bouquet around on your shoulder.

I'm reminded of the Dooney & Bourke Cindy tote with its lilies, but I do believe I like the look of this Kate Spade better than the D&B because of the Fairchild's simpler print. The brown vachetta leather trims off the cotton canvas beautifully, and Kate Spade's signature gold-plated hardware and logo finish the tote in style.

Sonia Rykiel Roped-Off Clutch | Resort Collection Handbag Trends

The resort collections have been going on for what seems like months, and we've been scouring the runways for the best bags and hottest trends for winter 09-10. Clutches are still big: literally and figuratively. The handheld bags that remain popular aren't your typical cocktail party, fit-in-the-crook-of-your-arm fare. They're a handful. The upside is that they fit handfuls of stuff like wallets and makeup bags that we once never dreamed of stuffing into a clutch.

The Sonia Rykiel Roped-Off Clutch is a great example of the silhouettes we're seeing on runways in both clutches and shoulder bags. A sort of vintagy, squared-off shape is being shown often with large flap closures, prominent trim and oversize pockets.

The trim on the Roped-Off Clutch is, you guessed it, rope. This is actually a great trend to hop on during the summer if you don't think "resort season" this winter is actually going to take you to sunny climes. Two front pockets add a sort of geometric aesthetic and are secured under the flap.

Other designers to feature squared-off clutches and bags for Resort '10 include Proenza Schouler and Balenciaga.

Dooney & Bourke DB Sport Duck Tote | Retro Cartoon Victoria Hold-all

Dooney & Bourke is known for its fun loving approach to life, and this shopper is no exception. Covered in a cute and retro duck print, this bag is light hearted and enthusiastic. It's lovely to see a print that is so much fun, and its unconventional styling will have everyone's attention.

The tote is nothing unusual in shape and size. Big enough to fit most of your needs, it is just like every other tote out there. Nice and spacey, in a simple square design. Don't be put off by the fact it isn't in an unusual shape, however - this hold-all does more than enough.

The thin leather handles are reinforced with square leather patches. With exaggerated stitching, this practical feature is turned into a pretty touch! To complete the effect of the leather trim, the tote has a cute leather tassel. Whilst allowing the bag to be tightened, this is mainly just an added extra to make this tote look good. It is the repeated duck pattern that makes this mid-range retro hold-all so effective in the end, however.

It is nice that this cartoon hold-all is available in so many color combinations, including green and pink, and oh-so-nautical red and navy. Everyone can have a pattern that suits them and their outfit. I just wish you could take these soapy wonders into the bath, or at the very least to a foam party!

Tignanello Printed Pebble Shopper with Wristlet | Logo-Printed Tote and Matching Bag

With nearly every handbag brand, there's sure to be a logo-printed collection to showcase the company's emblem. Coach and Dooney & Bourke are probably the most infamous and easily recognizable prints for this marketing ploy, but other brands try valiantly to follow suit.

The only problem, however, is that people generally love to display the brand's logo all over their bag as a symbol status. That works well for Coach but not as much for Tignanello, I'm sure. Though they gave their best effort with this Printed Pebble Shopper, it just cannot be compared to the more popular and distinctive labels.

Don't misunderstand me, though. I'm a fan of Tignanello handbags as they tend to be stylish, practical, and very decently priced. The Perfect 10 Tote is a prime example of that. While the Printed Pebble collection isn't my favorite from the brand, it's not one to overlook completely. The print, while obviously Tignanello's logo, isn't overly obnoxious as some of these types of bags can be. It's actually one of the more subtle logo-printed handbags I've come across.

Though not real leather, the Printed Pebble Shopper is a generous size and has a simple, classic shape. The long double straps seem sturdy and practical for long days out. I can just imagine all the things I could pile into this tote while shopping.

At only $79, this Tignanello handbag is very affordable. You'll even get two for the price of one with the bonus of a matching wristlet that attaches to a d-ring inside the large interior. The Printed Pebble collection offers a variety of colors and also has a gathered top version of this shopper.
