Model Alexa Chung is such a devoted fan of the Mulberry line that she used to carry around an old, battered, men’s Mulberry briefcase. Well, she certainly isn’t carrying around anything old and battered anymore; in fact, Mulberry’s It bag, the Alexa, was named after her. This fabulous new oversized version is bigger, but has the same understated style as the original.
The smooth black leather has a fine subtle texture and a light gloss that looks casual and sophisticated. The tiny, regular stitching, which is triple seamed in some places, shows off the fabulous craftsmanship of the Mulberry line.
The tailored shape of the bag hearkens back to Chung’s original favorite Mulberry bag, the briefcase. But the menswear element has been softened up for a more feminine look. This larger version is a bit slouchy, although it definitely holds its structure.
I love Mulberry’s restrained approach to design. You just don’t find any non-functional frills on their bags. The oversized Alexa is a beautifully classic bag for $1,250, and one that will stay stylish for decades.
