MICHAEL Michael Kors Uptown Astor Large Leather Tote | Slouchy Ruched Studded Black Leather Carryall

Some bags you like or dislike immediately, some grow on you, and then there are those that you just can’t figure out. The Uptown Astor is one of those bags for me. I’m not always a fan of Michael Kors, but there is something intriguing about the Astor. I’m just not sure what it is.

The textured black leather has an edgy worn look that isn’t exactly as uptown as the name of the bag suggests. In fact, I would say that the style of embellishment on the Astor is a little more downtown than uptown, as is the style of the bag in general.

The simple, flat tote shape is given volume by the center ruching and the general slouchiness of the bag. I really like the way the ruching has been gathered with the studded center strip; it’s a 70’s rock and roll touch that gives the Astor some character. I also like the studded reinforcements in the corners of the Astor, which add to its edginess and also protect it from wear.

What I don’t like are the skinny little straps and the grommet and o-ring details on the top, neither of which are particularly functional. I don’t particularly like the $450 price tag, either, although I know it’s reasonable in the designer kingdom. It’s one more thing about the Astor that I’m just not sure about.
