Whiting and Davis are taking a break from its traditional tiny timeless accessories to create something much more contemporary. But don't think this Python Print Handbag sees the fashion house abandoning its heritage altogether!

Whiting & Davis' trademark mesh is still a force, but the bold colors and python print pattern give the metal a more modern edge. The gleaming mesh is offset by glamorous black patent leather trim.

A polished patent belt encircles the bag, securing it shut with a turnlock closure. This feature hearkens back to the brand's vintage heritage, but when combined with the zippered top it makes the purse a little fiddly to get into. At least the safety of your essentials won't be an issue with these double security features!

The metal shell is lined with signature printed polyester to cushion your precious cargo. The mid-sized space is kitted out with a zippered pocket and two bellowed pouches to help keep the purse free of clutter.

This python bag represents a break from tradition for Whiting & Davis, and one I'm not sure whether its loyal fans will embrace. Although I'm confident the brand will win some new admirers with this walk on the wild side!

Gustto Picia Shoulder Bag | Ruched Patent Leather and Black Nylon Handbag

Gustto combines the party-appeal of patent leather with the relaxed charms of nylon to create the Picia. Under the hands of a lesser designer the combination could seem confused, but I think Gustto may have just pulled it off.

Without the patent leather, this nylon carryall would be shapeless, and frankly, a little boring. But that polished leather saves it. The ruched fold-over flap is the most obvious head turner, with its big bold silver hardware. But look closer and you'll see more of the glossy leather accenting the top of the Picia, its base, and the long shoulder straps.

The nylon lined interior is luxuriously large, offering enough space for everything you need to get through the day, and a few things you don't! But good luck keeping your precious cargo in order! The single zippered pocket just isn't enough to for such a roomy space.

It may have genuine patent leather details, but the $550 retail value seems far too much to pay for a nylon handbag, no matter how stylish. Thankfully it's currently on sale for less than half price at Endless.

Anne Klein New York Greenwich Satchel | Chic Quilted Black Nylon Handbag

It's all about downtown glamour with the Anne Klein New York Greenwich Satchel.

It's made from nylon, which is both long-lasting and lightweight. It also keeps this satchel down to a perfectly reasonable $275. This fabric rarely looks luxurious, but it's jazzed up here with vertical quilting and sexy patent leather trim. The silver chain zipper pull adds edge, working with Anne Klein's familiar lion medallion to toughen up the fabric finish.

This satchel is so large, it could easily work as an office bag or travel tote. There's so much room inside, and the soft walls make it easy to overstuff. Plenty of pockets inside and out make it easy to keep your girly goods safe and organized.

The only thing that makes me hesitate are those shoulder straps. While the heavy metal links mimics the chain on the front perfectly, it can't be comfortable to carry. They say beauty is pain, but for an everyday bag like this I'd rather put practicality first.

Emilio Pucci Python Shoulder Bag | Exotic Ivory Snakeskin Bag With Trendy Gold Chain Strap

I'm really excited about the way Pucci is branching away from its trademark prints. Don't get me wrong, I think Pucci prints are bright, bold, and fabulous, but they are a little loud, so it can be hard to accessorize with them on an everyday basis.

But not this baby, it'll go with anything and everything. And, is it my imagination or is $1,555 almost excessively reasonable for an exotic designer bag? Could be because it's teeny weeny. At 6" x 6" x 1", this is one bag that you're going to have to fill with only the most necessary objects.

Honestly, though, it's the perfect size for me, most of the time. Plus, I love the long chain strap that can be worn over the shoulder or across the body. And I also love the unique design of the chain itself. It has sort of an Art Deco appeal.

The amazing material of this bag is what really makes it amazing though. Ivory python? Yes, please. Grommet and chain link side detail? And the understated circular turnlock closure? Seriously, I'm dying. This bag is coming soon to the shoulder of a celebutante near you.

Kooba Riley Duffel Bag | Sophisticated Pebbled Black Leather Turnlock Handbag

It might be called a duffel, but this Kooba Riley is like no duffel bag that I've ever seen.

The traditional cylinder shape is gone, replaced with a chic angular design. Handy side pockets flare out to create the contemporary look, complemented by the modern lines of the large front pocket. The pebbled black leather is a timeless choice, offset by shiny silver hardware. The sexy round turnlock is the most striking, but the side snap tabs and zippers add a little more flash.

While Kooba enjoys playing with the duffel, at least its functional reputation is maintained. The sizeable interior space is well organized, with the obligatory zip and slip pockets, a pen slot, and a key hook. The double rolled handles are just long enough for carrying over your shoulder and or on your arm.

It might be just as practical, but don't expect to use the Riley as a traditional duffel. It's much more at home in the office or a cocktail bar than a sweaty gym!

With a black leather handbag, you're ready to go anywhere. Alexis Hudson gives this classic style a contemporary twist with the Vail.

The cut-out handles bring a futuristic, if not entirely practical, touch to the bag's traditional shape. Thankfully the Vail also comes with two longer straps for over-the-shoulder toting. A large pocket up front is jazzed up with a large golden turnlock closure. No mere security feature, the clasp complements the smattering of studs on those long straps. The details are modern, but you don't get the impression that they'll date any time soon.

The sophisticated exterior is backed up with a design that's made for everyday use. Alexis Hudson makes the most of the room, building a zippered pocket into one of the three multifunctional slips. There's also a dog leash clip, so you never have to worry about losing your keys in that generous space!

The $650 price tag is reasonable for a wardrobe staple like this. If the matte black variety is a little conservative for your tastes, consider it in the black and gray ombre leather.

Alexis Hudson Grand Bastille Bag | Large Ruched Tobacco Brown and Black Leather Handbag

Alexis Hudson is a relatively new name on the handbag block, but the financial crisis makes this the perfect time to check out this up-and-coming talent.

Without the star profile, Alexis Hudson handbags are all priced under $1000. This Grand Bastille bag comes in at just under $700. Not bad for an on-trend oversized handbag, right? That price buys us this head-turning genuine leather. It starts out black, but is softly graduated to a brown tone at the base. I love the look, but it's too daring to please everyone. So it may disappoint some to hear a more unified design isn't available.

The styling is utterly contemporary, with a ruched top giving way to a casually pleated body. There's no regularity to the pleats, giving the Grand Bastille a devil-may-care attitude despite its conservative colors.

Such a large space takes a lot to stay organized, but the Grand Bastille is up to the challenge. It goes beyond the typical zip and slip pockets with a pen and pencil holder and keychain. Gadget-loving girls may be disappointed with just one slip pouch, but you can always stash your iPod and PSP in the turnlock pouches up front.

The double handles are a little skimpy, but fear not. A longer strap is on hand for over-the-shoulder and cross-body carrying.

Kooba Natasha Tote | Coated Canvas Handbag with Turnlock Feature

Kooba is not a name that's as familiar to me as some fashion brands, but it's certainly nothing new to the handbag world. This company has been creating enviable designer bags for over a decade.

Though I don't think it's been at the top of many shoppers' lists for that long, the company has taken off in recent years with tons of celebrities followers and has been seen on young starlets such as Blake Lively and Kristen Bell. I can't really say that this Natasha Tote design automatically makes me think young, hip, and trendy, but it does have a certain appeal similar to that of equally popular brand Treesje.

This coated canvas version of the Natasha has been around for a few seasons, but is still just as stylish now as it was before. The square handle rings and other hardware is modern and trendy but not overdone. I like how that style contrasts the traditional turnlock closures on the front flap and sides.

If you're thinking that this shiny patent material is not for you, then you're in luck this season. Kooba recently released a luxurious suede version of the Natasha with their Fall 09 collection. Though there are a few minor changes on the details, like less stitching around the handles and top border, the overall design is intact.

Whether in coated canvas or winter suede, the Kooba Natasha tote is a lovely choice for a fashionable yet classic designer handbag.

There's something about this B. Makowsky Lucca hobo that reminds me of a Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag. I think it must be the combination of buttery soft leather with unique design details.

Like the Totally Turnlock Quinn and the Softy City Bag, the Lucca's bold color choice accentuates the lightly pebbled texture of the leather. The look is sophisticated and the kind of quality befitting a designer purse.

One of the best details is the front pocket with its coordinated stitching and soft pleating. The silver-toned hardware is quite exquisite. When you look a little closer, you'll notice the small floral details on it. That's definitely not something I'd expect to see on a Marc by MJ bag, but it's just the sort of unexpected accessory that sets B. Makowsky apart as its own brand.

In addition to the exterior pocket on the front, the Lucca hobo also has a nice amount of storage space inside with a zippered pocket and handy key ring for organization. The sueded lining is a great touch as well. This B. Makowsky bag also comes in dark brown and black.

Diesel claims you'll never want to let its Lock In Embrace door satchel go. While that level of love may be a little excessive, this is one of the better bags we've seen from the brand.

Diesel is known for its contemporary accessories which tap into modern trends. Yet often the brand tends to be a little too modern for its own good, creating the kind of purses we'll carry one season, but ditch the next. So it's surprising to see Diesel strike the right balance here.

The circular turn-lock closure is an interesting take on one of this season's trends. It coordinates with the leather finish of this flint gray bag, but pops on the other shades. They include classic black, and the unexpected but still conservative colors: roan rouge and honey yellow.

This roomy bag has loads of space, and the features we need to make the most of it. There are two main compartments, and a few more pockets besides.
