English Retreads Uses Tires to Make Eco-Friendly Handbags

English Retreads creates the handbags you’ll never “tire” of. These contemporary purses have a rock and roll attitude and an environmentally-friendly philosophy.

The slick black exterior isn’t leather. It’s made from the inner tubes from truck and tractor tires! The tubes are cut, machine-washed, dried, removing all remnants of the road to make them fashion ready. Designer Heather English then uses the versatile material to create handbags, book bags, wallets, belts, and other fun accessories.

The environmentally-conscious attitude extends to the bags’ interiors. Every English Retreads purse is lined with a fabric created from recycled plastic bottles.

Heather, an eco-friendly vegetarian, was inspired to create her first purse while floating on an inner tube.

It was out of necessity really; just needed a non-leather handbag and I’m really into recycling, so (I) just threw one together,” Heather told CBS News.

Heather created her first bag seven years ago, and she shows no signs of slowing down. She continues to design new purses which make a green style statement.

“I feel like we’re doing a really good thing for the world,” she said.

English Retreads handbags are available from the company’s website and boutique stores across the United States. Prices start from $65.
