Gucci is going green with the help of a Romanian college student. 24-year-old Laura Popviciu designed this stylish and sustainable Ever Manifesto Bamboo tote bag for a recent design competition. It's easy to see why she was the victor, as this tote combines elegance and eco-friendly practices with more style than we usually see.

The bamboo handle has always been a Gucci trademark, but this one's a bit smarter than the average. It attaches to the bag with nickel-free hardware, and it's removable so you can secure it to other compatible handbags.

The tote's body is made entirely from organic cotton. That soft fabric allows us to fold up the tote, origami style, when it's in storage. This handbag's minimalist style makes it appropriate for summer and winter use though, so I can't imagine it'll spend too much time packed away in a closet!

It seems that this is just the start of an illustrious design career for Popoviciu. She's already been snapped up by Hermes, who quickly recognized her creative talent. I can't imagine there are too many designers who land a role like that before they've even graduated!

The Ever Manifesto Bamboo store is available in limited numbers from Gucci stores in New York, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo, as well as Gucci's website.

Apolis has launched a line of bags to help farmers in Uganda. The Field and Philanthropist totes are both crafted from organic cotton grown by the African country's farmers.

Uganda was once a cotton farming powerhouse, but the nation's agricultural industry began to decline when civil war broke out during the 70s. Sadly Uganda's farming sector, and its workers, have never recovered.

The eco-friendly bags are part of Apolis' long-running work with Invisible Children's Cotton Initiative. Invisible Children sponsors sustainable development and education in Northern Uganda, and its cotton program is a key part of this. Sales of the Apolis bags help the struggling farmers support their families and the nation's sustainable farming practices.

The movement behind the Apolis totes means many of us won't mind spending a little more on them. I usually have a rule that a fabric tote shouldn't cost more than $100, but these Apolis bags are some of the rare exceptions. The Field Tote costs $196, while the bridle leather handles on the Philanthropist Tote make it a bit more expensive at $296. Both are fully lined with front pockets for stashing the items you need on hand. They're available to buy now through the Apolis website.

Amy Butler offers us an impressive 11 prints, but I think this cotton vine navy one is my favorite. Given its name I guess those pale yellow shapes are heads of cotton, but they're so abstract that they could easily be mistaken for flowers. Whatever they are, I love the way they pop against the navy blue background.

Whichever pattern you pick, you'll appreciate the Mallory's soft organic cotton body. It doesn't just feel good to touch; it's also good for the environment, so carrying it should make you feel even better!

The attention to detail is impressive for such a small purse. I really like the fabric covered frame, reinforced piping, and pretty floral cotton lined interior. Coin purses are so tiny that there's not really a lot of space to add extras, but Amy Butler's worked hard to offer value here.

And well she should, because at $36 this is definitely on the high side. Personally I think this is a case of paying a premium for sustainable materials, which is disappointing. However it's so cute that I'm finding the price gouging a little easier to forgive!

The silk-screened front and back designs are what draw you in: there are pink flowers for the girly girls, robots for young boys and the men who've never grown up, and the Because Every Bag Matters print for eco-conscious eaters.

Each one is made in the United States from tough organic cotton and printed with water-based inks. The material is as easy to care for as it is green. If your drink bottle or container of leftovers leaks you can simply throw the tote in the washing machine. It'll also withstand a trip through the tumble dryer when you're done.

However it's worth noting that these lunch totes are not lined, so any leaks may get messy. It makes sense as water-resistant materials like plastic aren't generally environmentally friendly, but there may be occasions when we miss those properties.

The Graze Organic lunch totes measure 11.5 x 7.5 x 5 inches, so they're large enough to hold waste-free food containers and reusable bottles, or even one of Graze Organic's own cloth napkins.

The bags and apparel items from Gina Michele are made entirely from green fabrics, including bamboo, organic cotton, and reclaimed suede, leather, and silk. Animal activists may argue that anything using suede or leather can't be truly considered green, but I think Gina Michele makes a compelling argument here. While the creation of new sustainable fabrics emits greenhouse gases, the use of these reclaimed materials has a zero carbon footprint.

The bags are adorned with feathers sourced humanely from a no-kill farm, metal studs, and rope handles. The use of reclaimed hardware and vegetable dyes would make the purses a bit more green, but I still have to admire the measures Gina Michele has taken.

I love the worn-in, weathered appearance of the reclaimed suede and leather on these purses. They're contemporary without slavishly following trends, and relatively affordable considering each one is handcrafted.

The handbags cost as little as $198, and you can get a Gina Michele bamboo jersey dress for just $82. That's a very affordable green outfit by anyone's standards! You'll find these eco-friendly apparel items and accessories at Gina Michele's website and Supermarket HQ.

The slogan tote has been re-released, along with a brand new Save the World bag, as part of Project Ocean. This program is the brainchild of Selfridges and the Zoological Society of London. It looks to raise awareness of the problem of over-fishing the world's waterways.

The Katharine Hamnett totes are just as green as their statements, as each one is made from 100% organic cotton. They're also machine washable to 40°C, although I suggest using a much colder cycle if you really want to go green.

Each limited edition tote is affordably priced at £18, and £10 of that will benefit the Zoological Society of London. The group plans to maintain existing marine reserves and build new ones to protect the world's sea creatures. Selfridges assures us that it's not making any profits on the sale of the handbags; the £8 difference is simply what it takes to manufacture these green totes.

These Katharine Hamnett totes aren't particularly exciting but they do make a strong statement, which is really all many of us ask of our fashion accessories!

Lauren Bush's FEED Projects is the latest fashion house to dig deep for Japan, following the country's massive earthquake and the tsunami that followed. The altruistic label has created this FEED Japan bag to raise funds for relief efforts.

Organic cotton makes the ideal backdrop for the bright red circle of the Japanese flag on one side, and the words FEED Japan on the other. Each bag is made in the United States, and measures 12 x 19 inches. The long handles, which have a 12 inch drop, should make carrying comfortable when the tote's loaded up. The FEED Japan tote's casual styling is ideal for running errands, carrying fresh produce home from the markets, and holding your trainers and workout clothes.

Food is just part of the project's work though. $10 from the sale of each bag will target the neediest relief initiatives assisting in Japan’s recovery.

Pretty patterns really are the Harmony's greatest selling point, so I'm glad to see Amy Butler offer a range of different prints. This navy one is called the Fuschia Tree, but there are five different patterns and colors to choose from. All the prints are feminine without being over-the-top girly, so you needn't feel like Elle Woods carrying them.

Amy Butler has opted for organic cotton, so it's surprising to see her choose regular leather for the trim and handles. The opportunity for a greener substance was there, so while I appreciate the quality I'm also wishing for something more eco-friendly.

The interior is better thought out, with an array of pockets and enough space to handle a 15.4 inch laptop. I love the way the patterned lining works with the printed exterior, and the trim around the pockets which make them a bit stronger.

This laptop bag might be inappropriate for a stuffy male-dominated workplace, but if yours is a bit more creative the Harmony could bring a splash of color to your work day.

This simple bag is a world away from the fashion-forward leather accessories we're used to seeing from the brand. In fact, it'd be boring if not for that clever green slogan, which puts a modern twist on Wall Street's 80s ethos.

Save for a pair of open pockets inside, what you see is what you get here. This is a traditional tote, with no real bells or whistles. It earns its green stripes with its organic cotton body, but there's really little to differentiate it from the swag of other eco-bags flooding the market.

But it's difficult to be too tough on a bag which gives back. Hayden-Harnett generously donates 100% of the proceeds from this tote to Farm Aid, a charity which promotes local, organic, and sustainable farming practices.

It might not be as chic as many Hayden-Harnett bags, but this tote is much more appropriate for a trip to the farmers markets. And for a mere $27, I'm satisfied with that!

Felt, and organic varieties of cotton, canvas, and twill are all used to create the striking bags which range from the small Eco Lola clutches and Eco_i iPhone pouches to larger Eco Avia messenger bags and Eco Spesa totes. Those warm colors come not from nasty chemicals, but from natural vegetable dyes.

While Zaum is focusing on its green credentials, it hasn't forgotten about all of those functional features we love. Adjustable shoulder straps, interior pockets, and secure magnetic snaps are all there to make our lives easier.

Not all Zaum bags are created equal though. Many won't please green fashionistas as they're made from vinyl. I'd love to see Zaum phase these bags out entirely, but while they bring in the dollars I won't hold my breath. Thankfully each green bag bears the Eco name, so it's easy for eco-conscious shoppers to spot the label's earth-friendly accessories.
