We've all seem some bad embossing in recent seasons. All too often it seems designers are just going through the motions, adding a scaly texture without authenticity. It's almost as if they've given up, assuming that there's no way they could create something as breathtaking as the real thing. Phillip Lim proves them wrong with this gorgeous subtle snake-embossed lambskin. You've got to look closely to see the texture, but it does an impressive imitation.

If it weren't for the rich looking snake treatment I probably would have passed the Berry by. It's frankly quite boring, with its ultra simplistic style. That allows the embossing to shine, but the purse also has the potential to be overlooked. That makes it quite versatile, but it probably won't turn any heads.

I have such low expectations when I look inside small purses, so this one's pleasantly surprised me. Phillip Lim's crammed everything he could into the Berry, including a trio of card slots, a compartment for paper money, and a snap pocket for coins.

At $285 Phillip Lim doesn't give us a lot of purse for our dollar, but he does give us practicality and timeless style.

The color of this bag is extraordinary. The rich jewel tone is a total knockout, and it brings the fabulous texture of the crocodile skin into incredible relief. The skin also has a great gloss on it that ensures that it catches the light in all the right places.

I love the stiff, structured look of this hobo. It's got a great teardrop shape, but without any messy slouchiness. The inset center piece adds another layer of detail to the texture, and the whole thing has a very highbrow patchwork quality to it that's irresistible.

$3,750 is really not unreasonable to pay for a bag of this size and quality. Gonzalez keeps costs down by using skins from animals from her own farms, and from hiring artisans in her native Colombia. The results are beautiful and more than worth the price.

This structured hobo, called the Tobo, I think because it melds his Totally Turnlock collection with a classic hobo, is awesome. It's a hobo with a flat bottom! I know, I get a little excited over seemingly minor innovations, but seriously, I love having the look of a hobo on a bag that doesn't totally collapse when you set it down.

My over-enthusiasm aside, this bag does look pretty hot. The smooth grained berry leather will add a great burst of color to your wardrobe, and will look amazing against increasingly popular floral prints. The flap and turnlock closure adds a cute and casual touch to the structure of the bag, and makes the softness of the hobo shape shine through.

I really dig the thick, gathered leather handle, it looks like it was made for comfort. And on a bag this size, that's really important. Particularly because you'll want to carry it everywhere. And the price, at $498, is pretty reasonable for the designer category, so you might just be able to!

This Elise bag, for one, might be a contender for the "It" bag of the season if it wasn't so unorthodoxly designed. I am almost never a fan of squarish bags, but with the twisted chain strap and flap front, this one is just so much fun that I like it despite its boxy shape. And all that smooth surface area is the perfect showcase for the glossy purple patent leather, which is rich and lustrous.

But it's the details of this bag that really make it work. I don't want to keep repeating myself, but would you get a load of that chain strap? It looks posh and bohemian at once, and the way it is threaded through the top of the bag is absolutely ingenious. I only hope it's also sturdy! The enormous front closure is absolutely gorgeous, and kind of resembles those owl necklaces that are so popular right now.

This is the kind of take everywhere accessory that wardrobes are built around, and I expect to see a lot of knockoffs in the discount stores by mid summer. I only hope someone makes a great one, because at $1,335, the Elise is out of my price range, although it is within reason for a piece from a high end designer collection.
