But these handbags are a far cry from the one Diesel displayed in its recent Miami Fashion Week Swim show.

If it's up to Diesel, we'll soon be carrying large double handled satchels to the shore. The style doesn't immediately scream summer to me, but perhaps that's part of its appeal. Rather than simply packing it away after our beachside vacations we'll be able to carry a bag like this throughout the year.

The detachable shoulder strap only makes this new Diesel satchel seem more versatile. The neutral color palette is another smart choice. It'll pop against the vibrant swimwear Diesel offers, but work itself easily into a wardrobe in any season.

Diesel claims the bags are spacious enough to carry a beach towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, magazine, and even an iPad, but I'm still not sure. The satchels seem very structured, so I'm unsure whether they could really hold as much as those soft fabric bags we typically see on the beach.

I guess we'll find out when Diesel's swim collection hits stores. Do you think we're ready for a beach bag revolution?

The Glimmer is large enough to hold fluffy beach towels, a pair of flip flops, a trashy romance novel, and most anything else you need to enjoy your time on the sand. However because it's made of cotton it won't weigh you down as large leather bags are prone to do. Such a wide handbag probably deserves more than a magnetic snap for real security, but at least there's a zippered pocket inside. That's large enough to keep valuables safe while you're spending time in the surf.

It's hard to find fault with a bag costing just $32. That's a steal, even if this tote will spend half the year in a closet!

The label varies the fabrics and colors, but essentially its reputation has been built on the satchel. So it's refreshing to see the brand stepping out of its box with this beach bag.

This is a real departure for Proenza Schouler. The luxury materials it typically works with are replaced with a much more beach-friendly neoprene. This waterproof material is paired with a large mesh exterior pocket, which is perfect for stashing the items you need on hand.

The bag is very tall and barrel shaped, almost like the Speedo bags we all remember using as kids. The dimensions seem made for carrying a neatly rolled up beach towel along with other seaside essentials. There are two zippered pockets inside, and a separate one along the bottom for storing wet swimsuits.

I'm never a fan of drawstrings, but I think Proenza Schouler gets away with the casual closure here. They're difficult to manage on an everyday purse, but it's not like you need to repeatedly get things in and out of your beach bag. As you won't be using it too much, you probably won't mind the effort that a drawstring requires.

Unless you spend a lot of time on the sand you'll probably balk at spending $485 on this beach bag, but it's certainly a well made option for luxury lovers!

There are several patterns available to suit all tastes, from the conservative gray on black logo print to this lurid floral-inspired design. This fun, feminine pattern is my favorite, but if your boyfriend often gets stuck carrying your beach bag you may prefer one of the more low-key designs.

The cotton body is paired with sturdy webbing straps. I appreciate their strength, as they should survive salty sea air and a little salt water, but I'm not sure about the look. It interrupts the design, and that's distracting to me, although I suppose that's a matter of personal taste.

I can't fault the features of the Peachy Keen, which is packed with pockets inside and out, but the size leaves something to be desired. It's too narrow to comfortably carry a thick beach towel along with all your other summer essentials, so be prepared for that inconvenience.

This Peachy Keen tote isn't the ideal beach bag, but for a mere $29.50 it comes closer than many totes in this price range.

Casually chic Parisian clothing brand JOIE has teamed up with Santa Monica's Shutters on the Beach hotel to create a limited edition beach bag.

The collaboration might seem unexpected, but the brands are a natural fit. Despite its European heritage, JOIE has always been inspired by the lifestyle of Southern California. And when it comes to Californian retreats, few have the reputation of Shutters on the Beach. It's a member of the Leading Hotels of the World group, and a favorite amongst celebrities who want to holiday away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

The JOIE and Shutters on the Beach bag's design is simple but stylish, with a white canvas body and contrasting tan leather-wrapped handles. Those handles add luxury, but I'm not sure how they'll survive in the elements. There are more practical touches though. The lightweight wooden bottom will stop the bag toppling over in the sand, and its water-resistant pockets are ideal for keeping your cell phone and MP3 player safe from splashes.

Just 300 of the bags have been made, so you'll need to be quick to score one. They retail for $175 from the Shutters hotel boutique, JOIE's Parisian flagship store, and Shutters on the Beach's website.

This pink and white Beach Bag is sugar and spice and everything nice, but honestly, it might be a little saccharine for my taste.

The bag itself is pretty standard. The cotton canvas is durable and will be great for toting all your summer essentials. The leather straps look great, but I'm not sure how practical they are for a bag that could be seeing a lot of water, salt, and sand. Leather degrades in the elements and this tote is definitely meant to be taken into the elements.

The other thing is the print. It's cute and sweet but  a little cheesy. The line drawing of the bikini and sunglasses is nice and all, but I don't particularly want to carry it around on my arm. Honestly, it looks like something that you could pick up at a seaside beach mart for under ten bucks, so for $120, I just don't get it.

Terry cloth isn't very luxurious, but it's ideal for summer beach bags. The material will sop up any excess moisture from your beach towel and bathers, making it ideal for trips to the seashore or pool. Don't think this is only a beach bag though. Its nautical blue and white stripes could also bring a little maritime flair to a trip to the markets or a summer barbeque. The bold chevron stripes are complemented by a blue acid-wash shoulder strap.

This generously sized bag doesn't have too many features, as it's really meant for bulky items like towels and flip flops. The zippered interior pocket is a blessing though, as it will keep your technology separate and safe from wet items when you're heading home from the coast.

This is a seasonal item which probably won't suit you once fall rolls around, but at $39.50 it won't break the bank either. For that price you won't mind having it sit in the closet until warmer weather rolls around again.

You see, this is one handy bag. The nylon is durable and practical, whilst the space inside is more than enough for a towel and other such essentials. Of course, practicality doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with good looks and style. Nylon is never going to be the coolest material, and although the hot pink is a great summer shade I think many people will prefer a more expensive looking counterpart. However, the difference is that this tote costs just $12.99, which explains the fabric and makes it an unavoidable bargain!

This is the functional bag you need for everyday use, and at that price you can afford to buy the other colors too!

While most clutches try a formal and structured approach to straw, the affordable Chelsea clutch is the first I have seen that lets the unkempt and relaxed nature of straw take the front position. Rather than neatly keeping everything in, the rough texture and gorgeous sun bleached shade are allowed to look as natural as possible. Only the wooden button breaks from the expanse of plaits, and that works to accentuate the hand-weaved ruggedness, rather than diminish it.

Whilst the realistic shape is charming, I can understand why it would put people off. After all, folks generally migrate towards symmetrical shapes, and that doesn't work in a purse such as this. Plus, the risk of the strap rope fraying and breaking is higher in this sort of straw clutch.

This is a cute bag, and well priced at $69. Plus, with all the different color options available there is bound to be one that matches your outfit!
