I must admit, I was never a great fan of the original Riviera. Its clean lines and minimalist design were timeless and elegant, but also pretty boring. I longed for the playfulness that imbued other Christian Louboutin creations. But you know what they say about being careful what you wish for.

This Riviera has the same sophisticated base, but it's been desecrated by the colourful Louboutin lettering. Looking at it I get that same feeling that I do when I spot historical sites covered in graffiti. The purse might have more personality now, but it looks much more juvenile. Christian Louboutin calls its applique "fun and playful"; I say it's just messy.

Christian Louboutin treats us to all those little extras that make us feel pampered. Its golden chain strap is really rich looking, and as it's detachable it doesn't need to clutter the interior when it's not in use. Its signature twill lining, in the same red we see on the soles of Louboutin's iconic shoes, is also plush.

But Christian Louboutin hasn't done nearly enough to command $1195 for this clutch. It's only made from satin twill after all, and its trim isn't even real leather. The Christian Louboutin name is certainly worth splurging on, but the label has better purses for this money.

I'm really not sure the label could have attached anything more to such a small purse. As it is we see flowers made from shells, other blooms made from colored stones, and a smattering of pearls, beads, and metal tidbits. And that's just the top layer. Look closer and you'll see the swatches of black lace, zebra printed fabric, and geometric patterned material peeking out from underneath.

The look really isn't to my taste, but I think I'd have respected Prezzo more if it showed greater commitment to this unusual finish. However, sadly the back of the Stone and Shell Short Clutch has none of the accents, and only a single material. You'd think I'd be glad to give my eyes a break, but instead it feels like Prezzo's shortchanged anyone who embraced the bold surface.

At least the label's not charging us a lot of money for this half-done mess. At $67 it's a steal for anyone who actually enjoys all that appliqué!

This shopper is made from a soft woven textile, which is given more personality with the addition of pretty flowers and leaves. The floral appliqué is lovely, although I think it gets lost in this particular color scheme. While there's something to be said for neutrals it seems a shame for the flowers to simply fade into the background.

It's also disappointing to see the shopper's plain back. It's not unusual for budget labels to keep the decorations on the front, but it's still disappointing to see this kind of corner cutting. I didn't need to see the intricate garden we found on the front, but a few carefully positioned blooms would have made the rear a lot more appealing.

This shopper is enormous with enough space for new purchases and everyday essentials. The interior is well organized too, with a large zippered pocket in the center dividing the space into smaller, user-friendly compartments. The flat base makes it easy to pack and unpack, while the straps are just the right length for slinging over your shoulder.

As with all Nine West bags, this shopper isn't luxurious or especially well made. It's here for a good time, not a long one. However its affordable $109 price tag seems reasonable for a bag so practical and as its name suggests, pretty!

A trail of pretty flowers arcs across the bag, adding texture and femininity to the design. I could have done without the large crystal center in the top flower, as that again takes this bag somewhere towards tacky, but it's not a deal breaker.

While we're talking tacky, there's also no getting around the material. Mellow World uses a blend of PVC and vinyl to keep its prices down. I appreciate the affordable prices, but the material leaves a bit to be desired. It's too stiff and too shiny to pass as leather, so I wonder why Mellow World continues to use it. By mimicking leather badly, the material actually ends up looking cheaper than the price tag.

The clever interior helps us forgive Mellow World though. There are three main compartments and a plethora of smaller pockets, so the amply sized interior never feels unmanageable. All those inside pockets are really enough, but we get a zippered one on the back for good measure.

It might not be the most luxurious bag on the market, but it is one of Mellow World's most stylish. And for $54, those feminine good looks are impressive.

I'm not sure I've ever given Bottega Veneta a bad review. Maybe an ambivalent one, but never bad. It seems like I never will, either, because it has got their design skills down pat. This leather leaf clutch is a great example of its sophisticated style, with a little bit of drama thrown in for good measure.

The material of this clutch is the main draw. It's not that the leather itself is so spectacular, although it is really soft and supple. The leaf cut outs are what make the bag, though. They have a really voluminous effect on the bag and a lot of dramatic flair, but are still elegant. How many things can you say that about?

The shape of this bag is nice and simple. What else could it be, really, with all this texture going on on the material? Nonetheless, it's well-chosen. Any rounder and this bag would have looked, well, hairy. This is the kind of eye-catching design that transcends everything going on in fashion but still manages to look unbelievably hip.

You have to pay dearly, of course, for such a keenly well-balanced design. But what's $4,000 for a lifetime of infallible fashionability?

This really is a pretty purse, with its soft pastel flowers and natural toned raffia. By using appliqué rather than a print, Valentino has given its garden some real texture and drama. The attention to detail is stunning, with each petal perfectly formed.

This clutch is slender but sizable, so with careful packing you might just fit everything you want inside. Happily that doesn't have to include a shoulder strap, as that is detachable. I'm thrilled that Valentino's chosen leather, rather than the traditional chain, for this strap, as it'll be much more forgiving against our skin.

The interior is also better designed that I expect the average clutch to be. There are zip and pouch pockets for holding our technology and valuables, and the rose pink leather lining is heavenly.

But then again, no Valentino clutch could ever be called "average." At $1,995 this Valentino purse is predictably pricy. But can't you just imagine how darling it'd look paired with a pretty summer dress at a country club luncheon? This one's definitely going on my wish list!

The neutral yet classic color scheme in this Fossil tote ensures that you really can carry this around wherever you want. The tan goes with almost all outfits, and the brighter colors are muted enough to ensure that this is still work appropriate. More to the point, of course, it is just really cute, as well as having a lovely crafty vibe thanks to that pretty appliqué detailing.

The shape, as with most Fossil handbags, is pretty ordinary. The label is much more concerned with the design than the shape, and perhaps that explains why its purses rarely cost more than $150. Still, there is only so much you should mess with in a basic tote anyway, and if you can fit in folders and work stuff then it generally deserves a thumbs up. A divided interior might have been even better, but I really am just picking.

All in all this is a pretty purse with a sweet and easy going vibe. I think it will be perfect for work over the summer, and even for cheering you up during the winter.

She's certainly hit on the tribal look, but this tote isn't as chic as its name suggests. In fact, it seems like a bit of a mish-mash with animal printed appliqués, different colored metallic skins, and studs all thrown into the mix. I think Kathy Van Zeeland was aiming for edgy, but the look is so confused that it seems to lack that vision.

That lack of vision extends to the interior. The dainty blue art deco printed fabric is pretty, but it's also befuddling. Leopard spots or tiger stripes I could have understood. Even basic black would have made sense. But this is just another element that doesn't seem to mesh.

It's a shame, because when you strip away all the aesthetic problems this isn't a badly designed tote. It's got the right amount of space for daily use, and its array of zip and slip pockets are just what we need to stay organized. Add two handy slide pockets at the sides and a pair of long, useable handles, and we're ready to face the day.

Well, almost. It'll take some careful planning to strike on the right outfit to team with this flamboyant tote. My advice is to go neutral and let this loud bag do all the talking!

Velvet really is a great material for that characteristic hobo slouch, which makes me wonder why we don't see more bags featuring it. It gives the bag that relaxed profile it needs, but its soft surface is plush and luxurious. The steely gray shade is ideal for winter weather, but it's brightened up a bit with the posy of colorful flowers.

These blooms will be a bit kitschy for some tastes, but I love this crafty piece of handiwork. The detailed embroidery makes those felt flowers real works of art. Can't you just imagine this little beauty brightening up those drab winter days?

You're really paying for all those accents here. The flowers are only on the front; while that's not unexpected at this price point it's also a bit disappointing. The Lauren is big enough to carry everything you need, but it doesn't have those extra special touches that really impress. The pockets aren't trimmed, and the magnetic snap isn't the most secure way to keep the bag closed.

This hobo's styling may be a bit basic, but its impressive interior might just make it worth its $144 price tag.

The clue was in the name, I suppose. La Boheme conjures images of a decadent kind of bohemianism, and that is exactly the impression that this fold-over clutch gives. The clever ridged seaming and cute, yet traditional, applique give a sense of folk dancing and carefree living, whilst the leather itself (and the clear artistry) take it above the realms of something that is just a bit hippy-ish.

If boho isn't your style, then I don't hesitate to say that this won't be high on your wish list. However, it isn't as over the top as many bags in the genre, and the brown-on-brown theme makes the applique and detailing a little less cutesy. Sure, it won't ever work for an evening bag, but it is more than smart enough for work!

The price of $368 is quite steep, but in my humble opinion this Jack Rogers clutch is one of the smartest boho purses on the market.
