This bag was made from candy wrappers that would have ended up in the landfill, which makes it not only super cute, but eco-friendly as well. It reminds us of the Capri Sun bag, but in a cute, pocket-sized coin purse version. It looks like there are many kinds of candy wrappers to satisfy everyone's preferences, and there are fun colors to boot!

This may possibly be the only saddle bag any woman wants. It's great for showing off a western flair and the perfect bag for true cowgirls. It also looks durable, which is definitely a plus. We just want to know how much it stores and how you carry it. Maybe you can just hold it by the horn. And don't we all wish it came with a free pony attached?

Many of Nahui Ollin’s cute candy wrapper purses are for girls who travel light. This Barhandle Satchel shows the eco-friendly designer is just as skilled at working on a larger scale.

Larger is a relative term though. Packrats shouldn't pick this up expecting a substitute for their well-worn oversized carryall. It's a medium-sized satchel, but one that probably holds a little less than the average. The woven candy wrappers are surprisingly strong, but you don't want to test them by overstuffing. Besides, with no pockets to keep the interior organized, extra luxuries will only create clutter.

Like any Nahui Ollin, the greatest drawcard is that adorable candy wrapper finish which makes each one a true original. This floral print is perfect for girls craving spring, while the barcode pattern has a chic monochrome look. The straight leather straps give the Barhandle its name. They look so striking, but they mean you will have to carry this satchel by hand. Thankfully the candy-wrapper fabric is more lightweight than leather or PVC.

The Barhandle has its limitations, but green girls looking to upsize their Nahui Ollin collection will probably find a way to work around them!

Forget hemp and candy wrappers. The latest eco-friendly fad is handbags made from billboards. Previously these purses were exclusive to green labels like Artecnica and GG2G, but now some big name designers are cashing in on the trend. The latest to don their eco-warrior hat is Chinese Laundry.

It makes sense to recycle billboards for bags. Their PVC finish is durable, so the purses will last for season after season. The fabric is also affordable. You can nab this Chinese Laundry tote for just $27. They're also bright and bold, and as each one comes from a different billboard each tote is completely unique. And if that wasn't enough, the smooth fabric also wipes clean with a damp cloth.

The generous interior is fully lined, but it lacks the organizational features a space of this size needs. I guess Chinese Laundry had to make some sacrifices to keep the price down! At least there's a magnetic clasp to keep your girly goodies kept safely inside.

This Billboard Tote is a great way to advertise your green credentials without sacrificing style.

Forget seatbelts and candy wrappers. There's a new kid in town when it comes to creating handbags from recycled materials. Hold on, though. This one might not be as creative as you're expecting.

The company reMade USA has mastered the art of turning old leather items into bags. Well, it's certainly not an unexpected source for a tote, but at least it fits right in with the eco-friendly fashion movement.

reMade USA takes old leather jackets and scrap materials from thrift stores and upholstery companies and works them into one-of-a-kind purses. I believe I like these "upcycled" totes better than others I've seen.

Sometimes Nahui Ollin's designs are a tad too whimsical for my taste, and occasionally the Harvey's selection just looks like a bag made of seatbelts. The reMade options, however, are quite chic. There are a few styles whose front pockets do resemble the leather jacket from which they originated, but it looks fairly natural since pockets are, after all, a regular handbag feature.

Recycled Handbags on eBay

Nahui Ollin has been cleverly weaving recycled paper into handbags for some time now. I'm not always a fan of her styles, but there are many designs that have such a great combination of colors and textures as to catch my attention.

The ER collection has a few different versions including tote, satchel, and this mini purse. On this particular paper option, Nahui Ollin used recycled Tootsie Roll paper for the main body of the bag. Surprisingly, you can hardly even tell until you really examine the material.

The Tootsie Mini ER satchel's best feature is the cherry red trim on the handles and bottom corners. If you're concerned about eco-friendly and animal-friendly issues, you'll be glad to know that this design uses only manmade leather. It only makes sense since the label places high priority on using recycled paper.

If you like the look but don't love the obvious utilization of candy wrappers, you might enjoy the other two options for this Mini ER purse. One is Sunday paper comics in color with black trim, and the other is an abstract print with orange details.

Obviously the Mini ER isn't a large handbag, but it's a cute little purse with tons of personality. It's exactly the sort of thing I've come to expect from Nahui Ollin, but I think this might be one of the brand's best yet.

Nahui Ollin is a big name in the environmentally-friendly fashion world. Her use of recycled everyday items makes her a leader when it comes to inventive designs.

The candy wrappers, soda bottle labels, and other various papers can sometimes look very similar to me from bag to bag at a distance. However, each is really unique up close with many bags offered in the multi-colored Tuttifrutti, like on this Ritual Tote, and in Letters, as on the Rosy Cheeks Wristlet.

This handbag is not for anyone who wants to blend into a crowd, though. The bright colors are enough to keep the shy from carrying it, but it's perfect for gals who want to stand out or don't mind inviting conversation from strangers.

It has sturdy leather handles and a handy buckled flap with a magnetic closure for style and practicality. The Ritual holds a decent amount of items and even has an interior pocket for small things.

Recycled material doesn't always mean inexpensive, though. Handmade and intricately woven can often carry a high cost. This paper and leather Nahui Ollin Ritual retails for $165, which seems a bit much to me for a bag you can't wear with everything. For a truly one-of-a-kind purse, though, I suppose it's a fair price to pay.

I'm all about eco-friendly fashion. Give me an chic, up-cycled handbag any day of the week. It's a recent, important trend for the fashion industry that sometimes doesn't get enough credit, in my opinion. Designers like Nahui Ollin and Harveys are just two of many bag designers that have taken unexpected, environmentally conscious materials and based an entire company around them.

While Nahui Ollin uses candy wrappers, Harveys is known for their popular woven "seatbelt bags". As strange is it sounds, the material has proven to be a smart choice given its durability and variety of colors. Some of their handbags, mostly in solid colors, tend to look like picnic baskets to me, but I stopped in my tracks when I came across this fun rugby version.

The alternating blue and white seatbelts create a striped pattern that makes me think of a cottage beach house all decked out for the summer. The rugby satchel gives me the itch to grab swimwear and a floppy straw hat and head to the water. I'm not sure if Harveys was intending to provoke that feeling with the stripes, but it definitely has a casual summer vibe.

As mentioned before, the entire bag is made from recycled seatbelts. Although some of Harveys other creations actually look like a bag made from the car part, most people probably wouldn't immediately guess the material of this one. The nylon blend is practical, durable, and most likely waterproof.  

The interior features a Harveys logo-printed lining and several pockets. If you prefer bolder colors, the collection also comes in red and white stripes. Look for more rugby handbag styles and sizes as well.

A Nahui Ollin bag is hard to miss. If you see a bag that looks like it's covered in candy wrappers, it's probably a Nahui Ollin original. When I hear recycled paper handbag, I don't think luxury, but these funky little creations certainly pique my interest. 

I'm all for eco-friendly manufacturing, and that's one thing that Nahui Ollin has perfected. Like this Rosy Cheeks wristlet, each bag is formed by intricately weaving pieces of recycled paper. It seems like such a creative solution for cutting down on waste as well as price.

I like the size and look of the Rosy Cheeks bag. A full-sized bag of this material is a bit much for my taste, but the proportion of the wristlet is great. It's perfect for carrying around a few items like lip gloss, cash, and an ID for those times when a larger handbag isn't convenient. Another option is to keep small items in this little pouch inside your purse. It's a great way to keep things organized.

Though a paper handbag doesn't sound practical, the Rosy Cheeks wristlet actually is. The recycled material has a glossy coating on it to protect the paper and make it easy to wipe clean when dirty. The paper can vary from bag to bag, too, which makes yours completely unique to you. How many other bags can offer that? This Nahui Ollin is available in multiple style options, but the 'Letters' paper shown here is my favorite.

Bag enthusiasts will love the trip down memory lane offered by Pocketbook Anthropology: A Treasure of Handbags. The exhibition, now showing at the Boulder History Museum in Colorado, features more than 60 purses from 19th century classics to modern-day marvels.

Some of the pieces on show include contemporary handbags made from cigarette wrappers and duct tape, beaded vintage purses, and even a wire bag while looks more like a crab trap!

These priceless purses are displayed alongside clever quips and quotes from notable women in history. My favorite is the American poet Ellen Rachlin, who famously said "A woman in her lifetime will spend far more hours hugging a handbag than a man." How very true!

With its sense of style and healthy dose of humor, this exhibition is sure to excite accessory-loving ladies. It will be at the Boulder History Museum until November 30, before traveling to Wyoming, Ohio, and New York.
