British Designer Giles Deacon Collaborates with Isklar Mineral Water for Limited Edition Tote Bag | Proceeds to Benefit Oxfam Charity

Posted on: Nov 12

London-based fashion designer Giles Deacon has been impressing the critics since his debut in 2004 with a quirky mix of luxury quality and whimsical details. As he has worked his way into ready-to-wear apparel available at places like Barneys and Nordstrom, there have been a few collaborations along the way.

Now he has teamed up for a new one that may or may not surprise his fans who have come to expect the unexpected. Giles created a new practical tote bag design along with Isklar, a company that produces Norwegian glacial natural mineral water. The designer recently commented on the collaboration:

"I am always on the look out for new, interesting brands with which you can get creative and have a bit of fun. With Isklar I felt there was a real story to be told – one with strong visual qualities that transferred seamlessly into fashion design, but also one that felt a little special and a little magical."

The limited-edition tote features a material that plays off of his signature silk jacquard and two exterior side pockets are just the right size for Isklar water bottles. When you purchase one of 100 Giles Deacon/Isklar bags, you'll also get the satisfaction of knowing that 50% of the proceeds will go to Oxfam to fight poverty and injustice around the world. Alexander McQueen Whatever It Takes Wallet | Long Striped Charity Purse

Posted on: Nov 8

Alexander McQueen is just one of many fashionistas, musicians, world leaders, and other assorted stars to lend their support to the Whatever It Takes initiative. Sales of the celebrity designed accessories, like this funky striped wallet, benefit the creator's charity of choice. For Alexander that's 21st Century Leaders, an organization which distributes funds to a wide range of charities concerned with education, health care, ending poverty, and more.

Altruistic motives aside, this purse isn't as luxurious as most Alexander McQueen creations but it does have its own sense of style. The gray and black striped canvas finish has an appealing unisex look, making it appropriate for no-nonsense ladies and their lads. A playful screen-printed pilot leaves a banner streaming behind him, which proudly boasts the Alexander McQueen name. His moniker is there again in the autograph. It's obvious branding, but when it's done as playfully as this it's hard to mind.

The silky lined interior features 12 handy credit card slots, plus an extra clear slip for your driver's license or proof of age card. The zippered pocket gives you a safe space for storing loose change, while the open pocket is perfect for notes and receipts.

At just $30, this Alexander McQueen wallet is a great way for bargain hunters to support a charity, and own one of the famed designer's pieces.

Judith Leiber Joins with Breeders’ Cup to Create Custom Handbags for Horseracing Silks

Posted on: Nov 5

Well, I won't call these new minaudieres a completely unexpected look for Judith Leiber, the designer who has created bags in such strange shapes as parrots, dolphins, and peacocks. However, the teaming up of Leiber with Breeders' Cup, an organization that hosts championship horseracing events, is still just slightly random to me.

Leiber has joined with Breeders' Cup to give horseracing fanatics the chance to see the designs on their racing silks transformed into a crystal-studded handbag. Interesting collaboration aside, though, I'm actually really liking the direction that these new bags are taking. There's a lot of opportunity for some stunning looks.

Each Custom Silks minaudiere begins with an artist hand-painting the racing pattern onto the box followed by the intricate and meticulous addition of crystals over the design. The result, like just about any of Judith Leiber's bags, is quite stunning.

If you don't want a custom minaudiere, a hand-beaded minaudiere displaying the Breeders' Cup's signature logo is also available. The signature bag is available to purchase for $2,295, while the custom silks minaudieres range from $6,300 to $12,000. Now that's some serious dedication to the love of horseracing.

Inge Christopher Alexis Flap Clutch | Metallic Evening Bag with Chains and Crystals

Posted on: Nov 4

There are versatile evening bags that easily accessorize just about any party outfit, and then there are the ones that make you long for a party. This Inge Christopher Alexis clutch is just the kind of evening bag around which I would plan an entire outfit for an event and be itching to use.

It might not be as showy as some options like the La Regale Pleated Bow Clutch, but the Alexis flap clutch has some very unique details that set it apart from other evening bag choices. The metallic silver sheen on the delicately pleated silk-blend fabric isn't entirely uncommon for this style of purse. However, the extras are what kick it up a notch.

One side of the front flapover closure has been decorated with thin chains that have been artfully arranged in a surprisingly soft feature. The chains wind around large Swarovski crystals also set into the design. The combination of the metallic fabric mixed with silver chain and shimmering crystals sounds like it would be too overwhelming for one little clutch bag, but I actually love the way it comes together.

This slightly edgy Inge Christopher take on the evening bag retails for $198. It is also available in a similarly priced framed clutch style as well.

More Features of the Alexis Flap Clutch

  • Measures 8.5 x 5.25 x 1.75 inches
  • Optional chain strap with 7 inch drop
  • Front flap with magnetic closure

D&G Dolce & Gabbana Vlada Clutch | Jewel-Covered Red Satin Handbag

Posted on: Oct 22

This glitzy D&G Vlada Clutch is practically begging for a glamorous winter party to attend. I cannot even look at this handbag without mentally pairing it with a fabulous cocktail dress, which is surely what Dolce & Gabbana had in mind. I'm guessing I am not the only one.

Only in a handful of social circles would a $1,475 special occasion accessory that you carry once or twice a year be considered a budget buy. For the rest of us, maybe we can categorize this one as a long-term fashion investment. A D&G bag isn't going to fall apart on you any time soon when taken care of well. While it might be a little trendy, this Dolce & Gabbana Vlada design is one that I can imagine continuing to be considered stylish for years and then vintage chic later on.

Though the majority of the clutch is a solid, gorgeous deep red satin, the front flap is covered with a veritable galaxy of shimmering jewels. It's the kind of feature that will sparkle in certain lighting and look absolutely stunning.

The keyhole-shaped closure is a clever twist-lock contraption that adds a whimsical touch to this fancy clutch. Although the Vlada bag comes in an equally elegant black, it's this ruby red color that I consider the prettier, more unexpected option.

More Features of the D&G Vlada Clutch

  • Measures 12.5 x 9 x 5 inches
  • Optional strap with 19 inch drop
  • Twist-lock closure
  • Satin body with jewel detail

Fossil Kristy Floral Satchel | Colorful Patterned Cotton Canvas Bag

Posted on: Oct 9

This bright patterned Kristy bag satchel from Fossil can easily add a little color to your everyday wardrobe.

The soft, round body reminds me a little of the Marni Balloon tote. Of course, the cloth body means it's not nearly as luxurious, or pricy. The bold, abstract pattern won't suit every taste, but it's a lot of fun. So I'm not sure why Fossil breaks it up with a wide woven brown band. I suppose this plain fabric tones the bag down a little, but it also makes the design look a little cluttered.

The cotton canvas finish doesn't just keep the price down. It also makes the Kristy very light to carry. What a blessing in such a large bag! Even when it's full, this satchel isn't likely to weigh you down. The spacious interior is a challenge to keep organized, but zip and slip pockets do their best to help you out.

The wooden handles give the Kristy a little retro flair, but they're not very practical. Polished wood may be smooth, but it never feels good in your hand for very long. Thankfully the satchel comes with a longer, and more functional, shoulder strap. It's a little skinnier than I'd like, but it does the job. If you'd prefer to use the smaller handles, just detach the shoulder strap for a clean look.

More Features of This Fossil Patterned Satchel

  • Leather trim
  • A zippered pocket and 2 large slip pockets inside
  • Fabric lined interior
  • Silver-toned hardware
  • A signature Fossil key fob on leather zipper pull
  • Measures 19 x 12 x 4 inches

Lauren Merkin Fall Collection Features Familiar Styles in New Textures and Prints

Posted on: Sep 21

I can't really hide my love of Lauren Merkin handbags. This designer, in my opinion, consistently hits the target when it comes to offering women timeless styles with classy and sometimes unexpected features.

Lauren Merkin's most recently released collection of purses for the fall perfectly exhibits that statement. There are some familiar faces, new designs, but overall lots and lots of fun textures and prints. All you have to do is look at the above image to see a collage of the new colors and materials.

I know that many shoppers are looking for the next big thing when it comes to handbag shopping, but this designer stuck with some of her best styles with this new group. As with Be&D's most recent collection, Lauren Merkin brought back some favorites like the Tatum, Louise, and Eve. Each familiar style has been revamped with details like embossed ostrich texture, feather-patterned silk, and corduroy suede.

I'm also really loving the Paige duffle bag with its traditional but delicate look as well as the curvy Cecilia with a braided strap. Go to Lauren Merkin's website to see all of the new and improved handbags.

Isaac Mizrahi Debuts Spring 2010 Collection on the Runway | Retro-Inspired Structured Handbags in Neutrals Included

Posted on: Sep 20

Isaac Mizrahi's show at the recent New York Fashion Week was quite a production. The designer with a personality as fun and crazy as his schedule brought a little of his quirkiness to the runway.

Mizrahi's new styles floated and flounced down the catwalk through an elaborate set involving two staircases, a platform, and even a little rain. The collection was reportedly inspired by "Fred Astaire, Anime, and 'The Obstacle Course to Glamour'."

Though the romantic silk and beaded paisley dresses were impressive, the accessories of the show were the real standouts. The belted shoes, flat-brimmed hats, and variety of handbags stole the show for me.

The common theme for bags was structure and more structure. The vintage-looking luggage cases and briefcase styles definitely had some Fred Astaire flair. Paired with the flat-brimmed hats, all that was missing was a cane. A few even looked like they might be holding a musical instrument.

The style was very specific and probably not up everyone's fashion alley, but I'm at least glad to see something different on the runway. No one can ever accuse Isaac Mizrahi of not being original. See looks from the designer's runway show here.

Stella McCartney Perforated Satin Clutch | Emerald Green Evening Bag With Elegant Perforated Design

Posted on: Sep 12

Stella McCartney always surprises me. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes not. Mostly, I love her downtown design sensibility and her dedication to her unique point of view. Bags like this Perforated Satin Clutch are exactly the reason why she has such a star-studded reputation.

The emerald green satin has a fabulous sheen and will definitely add a punch of color to your evening on the town. The perforated design gives the clutch an interesting, almost snakeskin texture, which is set off by the silver toned hardware.

The three-sided zip fastening pulls closed with a tonal stamped logo disc pull, which I really like, as it means that the logo doesn't detract from the elegant design.

Altogether, the clutch has an elegant, but somewhat sporty look that will work for a lot of evening ensembles. I can see it really popping against a hot pink silky something of a dress, or adding a little dash of color to a structured all-black get up.

  • 16" x 9" x 1" size
  • Grey satin lining

The Jesse B. Collection Velveteen Rabbit Clutch | Stylish Affordable Gray Evening Purse

Posted on: Sep 3

Like the beloved children's book that shares its name, this Velveteen Rabbit from The Jesse B. Collection is destined to become a favorite for years to come.

The name comes from the clutch's soft velveteen finish. It feels gorgeous, but it's also a recession busting choice, helping the purse stay under that magic $100 mark. The classic frame design is simple, allowing the tactile fabric to shine. Some may call it boring, but that basic styling is ideal for pairing with an elaborate evening gown.

There's no traditional closing device, but the frame design helps the purse stay shut. Open it up to reveal a space which is a little too slender to be truly practical, but stunning all the same. You’ll fit only evening essentials inside, unless you don't mind unsightly bulges, but the lovely silk moiré lining is almost enough to make me forgive its shortcomings.

The gray color is right on trend for fall and winter weather, but I wouldn't put this stylish purse away when the sun comes out. If you believe that gray is the new black, this neutral purse will suit elegant evenings out at any time of year.

  • An interior pocket
  • Measures 7 x 0.5 x 13 inches
  • Made in the USA
