Twilight Makes Stitch & Swash Handbags a Hit | Waiting List for Bella Bags

A starring role in the Twilight movie made Stitch & Swash bags an overnight sensation. Seattle designer Angie Bowlds has been inundated with orders since Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, carried a Stitch & Swash tote in the cult vampire film.

"It's an everyday bag that's easy to throw things in. [Bella] didn't have to fumble with a zipper or a flap," Ms. Bowlds explained.

Inspired by vintage illustrations and plant patterns, Ms. Bowlds creates all the screen prints featured on her Stitch & Swash handmade leather bags. This fall, Stitch & Swash fans can look forward to black leather bags, in addition to the label's typical earth tones. With this monochrome color expect some vivid screen prints in lime, aqua, and persimmon.

Prices start from $10 for a card case. Larger totes and satchels range from $175 to $225. If you want a Bella bag, I'd advise you to put your order in soon. The waiting list is already five weeks, but expect that to blow out when the bag is seen again in New Moon.

Betsey Johnson Whips and Studs Clutch | Soft Quilted Leather Bag with Tassel Detail

Sometimes I just have to laugh at Betsey Johnson's quirky but fun handbag names like Party Hearty and Made In The Fade. I'll admit that I was expecting something completely different when I ran across the name of this Whips & Studs Clutch, but the actual handbag turned out to be even better than I had imagined.

Although I'm sure I'm not the only one who can envision a bedazzled and tassel-covered creation from the designer, this Whips & Studs purse earns its name from one lone, yet rather large, tassel with a simple stud-like detail around the top which hangs from the zipper pull. Just admit that if you hadn't already seen the image of it you'd be picturing something a little more rock-and-roll inspired.

The simple studded detail around the tassel mirrors the intricate diamond-shaped quilted pattern on the leather, or perhaps it's the other way around. Either way, the two features, studs and quilting, complement each other beautifully.

This clutch would probably fit right in with the oversized category since it's larger than many others, but it's not enormous and bulky like some styles. While quilted leather might not have been what I'd expect from a purse with the name Whips & Studs, this Betsey Johnson design is effortlessly chic and would be a perfect semi-casual accessory for a wardrobe. It just begs for an outfit with subtle edginess like skinny jeans with studded heels or jewelry.

As it's an overnighter, this isn't the bag to rely on for an extended getaway. It might work as a weekender if you can travel light, but any vacations beyond that may be pushing it. If you can't bear to leave it behind, consider using this overnighter as your carry-on baggage!

The handles are much shorter than I'd like, but the longer strap is ideal for running across an airport. It's just the right length for carrying cross-body style, but as it's adjustable it’s just as appropriate for over-the-shoulder toting.

Betsey Johnson continues to serve up nothing but the quirkiest, most whimsical yet stylish bags around. At least, that's my take on the designer's goods. Where some brands take whimsy to a tacky place, Betsey Johnson somehow manages to make it more kitschy than gaudy.

Her Betseyville range of bags is fun and not completely out of reach for bag lovers on a budget. This Party Hearty overnighter is what I'd expect from the designer plus a little extra pizazz. While its bold look might not be for every traveling gal, it's perfect for those who like to look dressed to the nines even when running to catch a flight.

The weekender-style tote's quilted satin fabric has a luxe appearance, but is a far cry from Chanel's signature classic material. The Party Hearty's quilted hearts add a punch of the unexpected to a formal fabric.

Most women in the market for a travel bag are looking for function in addition to style, though. I wouldn't call this Betsey Johnson Betseyville tote the most practical travel bag I've ever come across, but it does boast a decently sized interior. The chain link straps are probably the most impractical part of the bag, but that's easily taken care of with the adjustable and detachable shoulder strap.

Marni Alpaca Tote | Luxurious Grey Fur Handbag With Leather And Chain Details

Marni is one of those young, hip labels that is known for having its finger on the pulse of cutting edge fashion. Which is why I was surprised when I saw this tote. I thought to myself, "Isn't that whole furry, Uggs-y thing kind of over?" Apparently not.

I have to admit that despite my initial dismissal of the bag, there is something appealing about it. How can there not be? It's furry and soft, like a little pet or something. Personally, I'm not sure I want to carry a gremlin for a handbag, but I know this bag will find a lot of takers. It's too "bohemian decadence" not to.

What I do love about this bag is the strap. The leather and chain combination is spot on, and I love the combination of the rich brown leather with the soft gray fur. The huge size of the bag will also give it an audience, as it's basically the size of my overnight bag.

Overall, I think this Alpaca tote has a semi-mysterious charm that a lot of women will find irresistible. If, that is, they're willing to swallow the $2,440 price tag. You could have an actual pet for less. Maybe even one that looks just like this bag.

Tommy Hilfiger Biscayne Weekender | Large Twill and Leather Tote

In general, Tommy Hilfiger is usually viewed as a purveyor of classic Americana style. I'd put this Biscayne Weekender somewhere in between a dash of all-American and a big dose of simple chic.

It almost looks like something you'd expect from Tignanello or even French brand Longchamp. The pretty combination of coated twill and leather is the perfect blend for a casual weekend tote.

This certainly isn't the only weekender handbag that Hilfiger has released, but I think it's one of their best. It's a great option for a carry-on, shopping bag, or overnight tote. The large, open interior will hold all you can manage to carry on one shoulder with a little zippered pocket inside for small items.

I suppose the only issue with the Biscayne is that the coated twill material is more appropriate for the warmer seasons than for fall or winter. However, as practical as this Tommy Hilfiger weekender tote is, I don't see that stopping most people from using it year round.

Roxy Layer Cake Satchel | Oversized Synthetic Handbag with Floral Print

There's something about this Roxy Layer Cake satchel that calls to mind The SAK Dandelion Flap, although the two bags are unique their own styles. The graphic prints on both, however, seem to have been hand-painted or drawn straight onto the exterior, which is a specific look but definitely an appealing one.

I'm attracted to the simplicity of the print on this Roxy satchel. The black-and-white combination with a pop of color on one flower is dramatic but not showy. It's as if we're supposed to notice and admire it because of its stark color combo but not get distracted by the fact that it has a large print.

The back of the handbag is as surprising as the front as it is entirely devoid of pattern. I suppose on days when the bag is ideal but your outfit calls for something plain, you could just turn it around to have the back showing forward. It sort of seems to defeat the purpose of buying the bag, though, since the print is the star of the show here.

The material is synthetic, but for an oversized satchel you can usually anticipate that when the price is set at only $82. The double handles have a small knotted tie at each anchor for a little decoration. It adds some whimsy and a carefree vibe, which I like.

For days when you've really got a lot to lug about, you can attach the longer adjustable strap and wear the Layer Cake satchel across the body. Whether you carry it around town or just on overnight trips, this oversized Roxy handbag will serve you well for style and convenience.
