Cole Haan is known for its leathers, so it makes sense that the brand would create a Soft Collection designed to showcase its "supple leather fabrication." And, as I always find it silly to make super soft bags too structured, a drawstring hobo like this one seems like the perfect shape for this line.

Do note that this bag is pebbled leather, which is not to everyone's taste. But of course there are some people who prefer it, and it does lend itself to the "soft" idea.

The drawstring detail is the main feature of this bag. It allows for expansion of the purse if you happen to have a lot of stuff to carry that day. The string is laced through satin-finish grommets and secures with a tab. A signature logo tag hangs from the shoulder strap.

Inside find optical weave jacquard lining, a zip pocket, a cell phone pocket and PDA pocket. Hobos aren't known for their organization, but this bag isn't so large that items will get lost in the bottom and these pockets will help a lot.

The Op Art print is one of my favorite Coach fabric designs. Bright, colorful, and just in time for the optical print trend sweeping the catwalks this fall/winter.

The first word that popped into my mind when I saw this Cole Haan Geni bag was "generic". I can't honestly say that my opinion has changed much after looking at it for awhile, but simple doesn't necessarily equal boring in this instance.

There's no doubt that the design is simplistic and understated. The espresso brown color certainly won't stop anyone in their tracks. However, the small details on the Geni Satchel are what make it a purchase to consider.

The jacquard material on this mini satchel seems to be a spin on Cole Haan's signature optical weave seen on bags like the Genevieve and Denney. Though it's really nothing like the unique look of woven leather, at least it's more than solid plain fabric. It gives the appearance that there's more to the texture than there really is, a trompe l'oeil of sorts.

The leather trim and side panels also add to the visual interest of the Geni Shoulder Satchel as well as the side zippers and tassel pull. I also like the subtle touch of braided leather on the handle. It almost seems like a reminder that this is indeed a Cole Haan handbag despite its lack of typical Cole Haan features.

The Genevieve weave is a big line for Cole Haan, which is why they've expanded it to include a patterned version for variety. Though it's the same line that includes the Triangle Tote, I have to admit that I wouldn't have ever paired that bag with this one shown here if I hadn't seen the name first.

This plaid woven tote does, however, come from the same woven leather collection as the Triangle. If you look closely, you can see the similarity of the optical weave. In my opinion, the contrasting black and white plaid pattern makes this version of the Genevieve much more interesting.

If this particular combo of colors is too basic for you, the plaid comes in a spicy orange and white duo as well. Don't expect any Burberry checks on this pattern, though. This Cole Haan plaid is supersized to make a statement. It's equally as noticeable as Burberry and maybe will eventually become as recognizable.

Being a tote handbag, it's got plenty of open space in the interior compartment. You might lose a few things down at the bottom of the bag, but I'm sure we all expect that to happen with a deep tote. The width is fairly generous, too, for extra practicality.

The woven leather look is certainly nothing new for handbag fashion. The intricate technique has been done again and again for spring and summer collections. Though these basket-like bags are a dime a dozen right now, the Cole Haan Denney stood out to me with its simple design.

The Denney bag has actually been around for a little while and has been available in suede for the fall/winter months. This version, though, is from Cole Haan's woven Genevieve collection just like the Triangle Tote I reviewed several weeks ago.

While the tanned leather material used on the two handbags is the same, the styles are very different. I actually prefer the Denney for everyday use because of its more practical aspects. Personally, I can see myself losing endless amounts of important things at the bottom of the Triangle Tote, whereas the Denney would have easier access to items due to its wide rather than deep shape.

I always appreciate side pockets, too, even though they're not the most aesthetically pleasing detail. From a convenience standpoint, though, they are a great addition. My one complaint about this version of the Denney is the shiny metallic hardware that jumps out at you. Combined with the woven texture, it makes the purse just a little too busy, in my opinion. Maybe a brushed metal would've been less distracting.

The Cole Haan Denney comes in this large chocolate-colored Genevieve optical weave as well as a multitude of other colors and sizes. Look for it in solid leather and suede too. This large woven version sells for $595.
