Bally ups the sophistication factor of the traditional hobo with the Keli.

The crescent shape and relaxed form are pure vintage hobo, but there's a certain chicness here missing from those classic purses. This one's much more uptown girl than flower child, making it a more versatile choice for most fashionistas. The nappa leather and pleats bring that sophistication, while emphasizing that casual slouch.

I do worry about how sophisticated a purse of this size will look slung over a shoulder though. There's always the risk of overwhelming your frame with an oversized bag, and this one definitely fits that description. But at least there's the space to carry everything you need, and a few things you don't!

I'd have appreciated a few more color options, but it's hard to argue with the appeal of basic black. In this classic shade you could easily pair the Keli with a power suit during the day before toting it to the bar for a few martinis afterwards!

British Designer Giles Deacon Collaborates with Isklar Mineral Water for Limited Edition Tote Bag | Proceeds to Benefit Oxfam Charity

London-based fashion designer Giles Deacon has been impressing the critics since his debut in 2004 with a quirky mix of luxury quality and whimsical details. As he has worked his way into ready-to-wear apparel available at places like Barneys and Nordstrom, there have been a few collaborations along the way.

Now he has teamed up for a new one that may or may not surprise his fans who have come to expect the unexpected. Giles created a new practical tote bag design along with Isklar, a company that produces Norwegian glacial natural mineral water. The designer recently commented on the collaboration:

"I am always on the look out for new, interesting brands with which you can get creative and have a bit of fun. With Isklar I felt there was a real story to be told – one with strong visual qualities that transferred seamlessly into fashion design, but also one that felt a little special and a little magical."

Kate Spade Coney Island Stevie Satchel | Quilted Nylon Handbag with Button Detail

I'm all for quilted handbags, but ones that look like down comforters or puffy vests make me hesitate a little. That's why I'm undecided on this Kate Spade Coney Island Stevie satchel.

On one hand, I like the idea of a practical nylon handbag that's given a quilted design to set it apart from just any run-of-the-mill nylon tote. You can't say Kate Spade isn't at least somewhat original. On the other hand, this large quilting with button detail looks more like something I'd wear to go skiing ... or maybe just a blanket to cuddle up under on a cold day. Though I'm sure it's not the intended response, I can't help but think "snow bunny" when I see version of the Stevie.

It's not the actual bag style that bothers me, however. The Stevie satchel is a popular choice from Kate Spade and one that comes in a variety of textures and fabrics. The Classic Noel Stevie is a perfect example of how different the silhouette can look with a different façade.

Of course, snow bunny fashion just might be your ideal look. If so, this Coney Island Stevie's puffy, cozy exterior combined with its roomy interior is right up your alley. In addition to this Kate Spade kelly green, this satchel also comes in red, black, and a berry fuchsia color and retails for $295.

Bally Verbella Tote Bag | Purple Vintage Art Fabric Purse

This Verbella tote from Bally is just the thing for adding a dose of vintage sass to your wardrobe.

The front features a retro Bernard Villemot illustration of two sexy girls with knowing smiles and longer than long legs! It's reminiscent of the kind of art we'd expect to see in pre-war Parisian ads: saucy and oh so chic. The purple fabric contrasts with polished black patent belts, straps, and trim. If you prefer a more unified look, you can pick up the Verbella in classic black.

But a tote is about more than just good looks. Bally delivers some of the practical touches we've come to expect, from the hard-wearing jacquard lining to all that luxurious space. I only wish the brand had considered security. There's no closure, and not even a zippered pocket to hide away valuables. I'm also not sure about those straps. The patent leather is attractive, but they're just so short and skinny. I'm not sure whether they'd ever snap, but they are bound to dig into your palms when the tote's loaded up.

You may not use it for carrying the crown jewels, or want to carry it all day, but the Bally Verbella is a quirky solution for toting your everyday items.

Cole Haan Village Drawstring Hobo | Red Soft Collection Handbag

Cole Haan is known for its leathers, so it makes sense that the brand would create a Soft Collection designed to showcase its "supple leather fabrication." And, as I always find it silly to make super soft bags too structured, a drawstring hobo like this one seems like the perfect shape for this line.

Do note that this bag is pebbled leather, which is not to everyone's taste. But of course there are some people who prefer it, and it does lend itself to the "soft" idea.

The drawstring detail is the main feature of this bag. It allows for expansion of the purse if you happen to have a lot of stuff to carry that day. The string is laced through satin-finish grommets and secures with a tab. A signature logo tag hangs from the shoulder strap.

Inside find optical weave jacquard lining, a zip pocket, a cell phone pocket and PDA pocket. Hobos aren't known for their organization, but this bag isn't so large that items will get lost in the bottom and these pockets will help a lot.

With the Blackburn, Fossil has created a bag which puts functionality first.

That's not to say this cross body bag is ugly. The super-soft pebbled leather is quite lovely, and some unexpected color choices like eggplant purple and this royal blue really pop. But this isn't the bag you buy to stop traffic. It's much more interested in getting the job done, and that's exactly what it does. While the zippered pocket up front is immediately noticeable, look harder and you'll see a slip pouch hidden behind. If you'd rather tuck your essentials away, there are more pockets inside. A zippered pouch is a secure space for carrying valuables, while the open slips are ideal for stashing your cell phone and iPod.

The long strap is fully adjustable for just the right fit. It extends to a massive 42 inches, so you can wear it over your shoulder or across your body.

This is the kind of purse which never wows, but endures season after season. While we might go gaga over "It" bags, we all need staples like this in our closet. Pair it with jeans and your favorite tee for a timeless casual look.

Lanvin Kansas Tote Bag | Iconic Black Leather Functional Handbag

The season's latest it bags inspire envy, but when it comes to laying money down most of us are more likely to splurge on a classic carryall like the Kansas than the latest fad.

It may not make a lot of waves, but the Kansas is the kind of bag you could carry to work, drinks with the girls, and dinner afterwards. It's stylish but not cutting edge. After all, basic black leather and a dash of silver hardware will never go out of style.

The design is contemporary without pushing the envelope. Belted accents run from the shoulder straps down to the base. A little slouch makes the Kanvas look relaxed, but stops short of appearing sloppy. The Lanvin charm is more than an aesthetic touch, giving us a convenient place to hang our keys so they're always on hand.

It's not just the Kanvas' conservative appearance which makes it an office favorite. It's also cleverly designed, with a large center compartment dividing the bag into three sections. Your cell phone has a place in the sole smaller pouch, but I’m not sure where you'll put your iPod or Nintendo DS!

A purse boasting this heritage and style never comes cheaply, so it's no real surprise that the Kansas clocks in at $2030. Thankfully though, unlike similarly priced it bags, you won't have to replace it any time soon.

Bally Venusia Tote | Black Nylon Handbag with Artist’s Print

I'm not sure whether artist Bernard Villemot was inspired by Bally or if the fashion brand asked for an advertisement, but Villemot's "Bally Blonde" is a striking piece of bold but simple art. The vintage ad dating back to the 1980s is only a hint of the label's long history since Bally began over 150 years ago, but it is indicative of the simple, chic style of the brand.

I sort of wonder who decided that "Bally Blonde" would look fabulous printed on a tote. It seems an interesting choice to me since I'm used to seeing high-priced but gorgeous luxury handbags of ostrich and suede. However, it's a whimsical side of the label that I'm glad to see.

Without the print, there's nothing exciting about the Venusia. It's mostly just a black nylon tote with patent leather handles. However, slap on a piece of art, and you've got something special. I don't usually expect the brand name to be plastered on Bally's handbags, only the occasional subtle logo print. It is on the original art, though, which makes the Venusia's display of it make sense.

The aforementioned subtle logo print appears on this tote by way of the interior jacquard lining. You'll also find your standard zippered pocket inside as well. The sides are cinched in with patent leather belts giving the Venusia bag a pretty a-line shape. This Bally tote retails for $285.

Cole Haan Geni Shoulder Satchel | Jacquard and Leather Mini Handbag

The first word that popped into my mind when I saw this Cole Haan Geni bag was "generic". I can't honestly say that my opinion has changed much after looking at it for awhile, but simple doesn't necessarily equal boring in this instance.

There's no doubt that the design is simplistic and understated. The espresso brown color certainly won't stop anyone in their tracks. However, the small details on the Geni Satchel are what make it a purchase to consider.

The jacquard material on this mini satchel seems to be a spin on Cole Haan's signature optical weave seen on bags like the Genevieve and Denney. Though it's really nothing like the unique look of woven leather, at least it's more than solid plain fabric. It gives the appearance that there's more to the texture than there really is, a trompe l'oeil of sorts.

The leather trim and side panels also add to the visual interest of the Geni Shoulder Satchel as well as the side zippers and tassel pull. I also like the subtle touch of braided leather on the handle. It almost seems like a reminder that this is indeed a Cole Haan handbag despite its lack of typical Cole Haan features.
