The name L.L. Bean is more likely to evoke images of the great outdoors than the High Street. But the American brand is set to up its fashion standing with the launch of its signature collection.

"This is for modern, everyday dressing," explained the brand's vice president, Chris Vickers. "My goal is not to challenge you. My goal is to make your life better."

The makeover is all thanks to Rogues Gallery's Alex Carleton, who's injected fun preppy looks, cute prints, and more silhouetted shapes into the brand. Thankfully he hasn't done away with the staples altogether. Those oversized totes we all used to carry books to college are still there, as practical as ever.

Unlike so many signature collections, L.L. Bean's line promises to be kind on your wallet. Shirts will cost between $50 and $70, while the sports jackets will sit at around $200.

The L.L. Bean Signature collection was unveiled in New York City last week, but we'll need to wait until March 2010 to get our hands on the goods.

It feels strange writing about a handbag that isn't created by any real brand at all. However, I couldn't resist talking about a tote that hits so many popular trends all at once!

Firstly, with crafting, quilting and patchwork make-do-and-mend style becoming increasingly popular, this patchwork tote is just the thing that craft conscious girls may be looking for. Add eighties style neon brights that will go brilliantly with your funky shoulder pads, and dash of unnecessary contrasting zebra print, and there aren't many fashions left to be incorporated.

Of course, this isn't a tote for girls who want to blend in. In fact, anyone in a serious location, such as work or a date - watch out! This is a fun eye catching design that begs for attention - and as much of it will be bad as good. Somewhat like Marmite, I predict that you will either love this, or hate it!

If neon patchwork is your thing, and channelling eighties wildness is what you do, however, then this synthetic leather bag is actually great fun. Citrus orange, pinks, glossy browns and vibrant greens. The interior, thankfully, sticks with simple safe black, meaning that anything can get spilt and the damage should be minimal.

The bad points about this abstract totes are fairly self explanatory. The eye-watering shades will be too much for many, most colors will clash, and the luxuries are definitely a little scarce. In you feel like having impractical fun on a credit crunch budget, however, then this 80's tote will be ideal!

A new website is helping the powerful tween demographic design their own fashions.

Fashion Playtes was created with pre-teen girls and young teenagers in mind. Users can customize a shirt, skirt, or handbag with their favorite colors and features such as ruffles and ribbons. Once they're happy with the design, girls can then purchase it. Whether they want to buy a new accessory or not, designing one sounds like a lot of fun.

But the site isn't simply a money-making exercise. It also aims to give girls a place to gossip about fashion and share their designs.

"We really want to make it more of a community so girls can share and collaborate," said founder and CEO Sarah McIlroy. "We want to have a gallery — which we are working on right now — where girls can upload the clothing."

The website also plans to have a number of fun games for girls to play when it officially launches in the first quarter of 2010.

Mad Imports keeps it casual with this cute Leilani clutch.

It's made from natural-toned raffia, jazzed up with an adorable embroidered bird and leaves design. Each Leilani is a little different depending on the color you choose. I love the swooping swallow on this ocean blue clutch, but the blooms also come in punch pink, mango orange, and apple green. Each has a slightly different bird, so you're really spoiled for choice.

Don't buy the Leilani expecting bells and whistles; it's all about the looks. There are no shoulder straps, no pockets, and only a snap closure for security. But there's something refreshing about that pared down design, which seems entirely appropriate for such an organic purse.

Like all Mad Imports bags, the Leilani is a real change from the mass produced high-end designer clutches we so often see. Every purse is handwoven and made following fair trade practices in Madagascar. It won't suit a black-tie gala or any other upmarket event, but its simplicity and colorful design have its own appeal.

In the 90s, Zevs was one of the top graffiti artists in Paris. Today his work is shown at international galleries around the world. What a difference a few years make!

In his latest exhibition, Liquidated Logos, Zevs has taken some of fashion's most iconic monograms and turned them into modern art. The recognizable signature prints of Louis Vuitton and Chanel are manipulated and cast on canvas, ceramics, and even metal. In this piece the colors of the famous LV logo run down the piece, almost as if they've been caught in the rain.

The eye-catching artworks will be on show at the Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong from July 16.

But there's some concern that Zevs may not make it to the grand opening. He was arrested yesterday after painting the Chanel logo on the exterior of Chater House, an office tower in central Hong Kong. Sure it's great advertising for the show, but some might say it's also going a little far!

While most purses simply offer us a range of colors, Mad Imports goes one step further with a selection of fun designs. There are plain versions with cute wooden features including hearts, circles, and butterflies. Then there are the bolder multi-colored options, including a wild zebra print, a feminine floral, and this fun rainbow purse.

There are seven Gigis to choose from, all crafted from summery raffia fabric. The shape is simple, with cute curves and a traditional flap. By keeping things basic, the vibrant designs never look too busy.

That basic design does limit the Gigi's practicality though. This really is a no frills clutch, with no pockets or shoulder straps to be seen. That might disappoint some girls, but I don't mind that stripped back style.

This will never become your go-to clutch purse, but if you're looking for a fun purse to brighten up a summer dress, it might be just the thing.

Nina Ricci keeps it simple with this chic clutch.

It's the antidote to all those overworked evening purses covered in sparkling sequins, glittering rhinestones, frills and frippery. Instead the lines are smooth, and the details are kept to a bare minimum.

Of course basic never means boring where Nina Ricci is concerned. The highlight is the asymmetrical flap top closure, which adds interest without overwhelming the design. The salmon suede is unexpected too. Pink could never be called conservative, but the pastel shade is just subdued enough to provide pop without dominating an outfit.

While that minimalistic approach gives this clutch a sleek look, it also sees us do without the little extras we love. There are no interior pockets, and no shoulder strap tucked inside either. What you see is really what you'll get.

It looks so stylish brand new, but I'm not convinced of this clutch's staying power. Suede has a tendency to look worn, and the pale pink hue isn't likely to hide battle scars. I suggest treating this purse with kid gloves if you hope to carry it for a few seasons.

Handbags are great for carrying stuff around. This is obvious. They are functional, fashionable items that can be used to complete an outfit or transport your belongings. Or, at least, this is what they used to be.

As such, it is rather fabulous to look at. Brilliantly retro in design, the bag features two huge zippered pockets, and thick chunky leather handles. It is bright, in your face, yet in reality the colors are muted and move delicately thorough the shades of acid brown. This paint covers the iconic Vuitton pattern, which peeks coyly through. This is a bag that only hints at it's designer origins. It would look as at home on a gallery as on a supermodel's arm! Plus, you always have a line with this treasure: it features two gently humorous jokes emblazoned on the front, both in this case from a man's perspective.

To quickly address the practical issues, there is no problem with space and storage in this monster tote. This monogram collection may feature cute themed jokes branded on the side, but a joke they ain't. They have strong supportive handles, wide berth, and are in supple leather. They also usefully feature a ring for purses or keys and a nice little cell-phone compartment.

I will venture as far as to say that this bag goes through the motions of being real, of being usable. If you wanted too, you could easily carry this holdall with you - as long as you have a team of well-trained security guards watching your back. After all this bag is priced as art, and is signed by the artist himself. Consequently, it soars in at an unbelievable and thoroughly collectible $5000!!

An investment? Perhaps!
