Marc Jacobs Flash Quilted Pony Skin Bag | Luxe Fuchsia Quilted Leather Shoulder Bag With Chain Strap

I love the way Marc Jacobs interprets trends, old and new, and then reinvigorates them in modern downtown designs. Bags like this perfect pony skin bag are just what I'm talking about.

There has been a major rush lately for quilted bags. All those Chanel caviar bags have been making a comeback in a major way, and spawning rip offs from Bergdorf's to Kmart. This quilted bag, though, looks more like its doing its own thing. I have really never seen quilted pony skin, and certainly in not in an eyepopping shade like this fabulous fuchsia.

The square shape of the bag works perfectly with the square quilted pattern, and I also really like the way the square push clasps in the corners of the top flap mimic the overall square theme. The exposed zipper around the bottom of the bag is pure genius. Not only does it look good, but it allows you to expand the size of the bag, for days when you need just a tad more room. And, all the bright gold tone hardware accents and chain strap contrast beautifully with the cool hot pink hue.

I'm just crazy for this bag, and part of the reason is that while I can see elements that Jacobs has borrowed from the past and present, he's combined them in a way that looks uniquely of the moment, not to mention uniquely Marc Jacobs.

Marc Jacobs The Single Evening Bag | Quilted Fuchsia Leather Purse With Chain Strap

There's nothing as disappointing as when one of your favorite designers comes up with something that you think is totally unoriginal. Then you have to begin to question your own taste and wonder whether they were ever original at all.

Not that I would ever wonder those things about Marc Jacobs. I think he's pretty much proven himself to be a complete genius over the years. Well, I guess even geniuses have off days, because this bag looks like it walked straight out of a Chanel store circa 1992. Seriously, it looks so much like a Chanel caviar bag that if you just threw a double C logo on it, I'm pretty sure it would fool anyone.

All that being said, the bag is still cute, and there's no way you could walk out of a Chanel store with a bag like this for $575. The color is, as far as I'm concerned, what really makes this bag work. The Single has both a chain and a leather strap, so you can carry it on your wrist or sling it over your shoulder. The 8" x 6" x 2" is perfect for a night on the town when you don't need to carry much with you.

The metallic fuchsia quilted leather manages to look both brilliantly offbeat and a little elegant at the same time. It would be the perfect complement to a simple black dress or even something really loud and crazy. So, despite its lack of complete and total singularity, The Single is a hot designer bag at a decent price.

The Bubble bag is the latest "It" handbag to come from the iconic fashion house of Versace. Halle Berry and Fergie have been snapped carrying the tamer nude and beige versions, but I prefer this vibrant orange purse. The shade accents the Bubble’s unique texture, and satisfies the current trend for all things 80s.

It’s that texture which gives the Bubble its name. The perforated leather is gathered and quilted, creating a cute squishy look which just begs to be touched. The texture continues through the handles, which are plaited for comfort and style. Signature rings on the sides of the bag mimic the tasseled zipper pull with their almost psychedelic concentric circles. There's a lot going on, which will probably alienate conservative tastes, but I believe that somehow it all works.

The generous interior is roomy without being overwhelming thanks to the abundance of pockets. Zip and slip pouches are on hand to store your personal technology, loose change, and other little essentials. They're all trimmed with leather to resist wear and tear for years to come.

It is lovely, but as with so many "It" bags the Bubble is out of the reach of many of us. With a retail value of $3440, eBay's the only option for most purse lovers!

Lanvin Amalia Small Shoulder Bag | Luxe and Sophisticated Cream Quilted Leather Shoulder Bag

Lanvin is known for creating sophisticated, feminine, heirloom-quality garments, and its accessories line lives up to its reputation. The Amalia combines classic elements with a modern design perspective to create a bag that is gorgeous and versatile.

This bag harkens back to the popularity of the Chanel caviar bags of the early 90's. But, Lanvin has made enough innovations to that classic design for it to look new, fresh, and totally Lanvin. The briefcase style bag looks mature without being stuffy, and the leather handles on the chain straps add a degree of edginess that is refreshing.

The cream colored leather is soft, supple, and the quilted texture is an added luxurious detail. The gold hardware is a good complement to the ivory leather, but the black fabric woven through the chain straps is even better.

Honestly, I would have liked it better is the fabric wove throughout the length of the straps. I usually appreciate a certain level of asymmetry, but the black against the cream is so lovely that it makes the other side of the bag look a little ho-hum. The outer gold zipper across the front of the bag is the only thing that, for me, saves the Amalia from becoming boring.

At 17" x 10" x 7", the size is great for day, and its neutral palette will go with almost anything.

The zippered wall pocket is large enough to pack a real organizational punch. The side pocket adds convenience, but it's not my favorite feature. Perhaps it's the asymmetry it brings to the bag, but it appears a little tacked on.

The short handles mean over the shoulder-toting is out of the question. This purse is a little chunkier than I'd fancy lugging around by hand all day, so if you're running errands you may want to leave this glamour puss at home.

The Madonna makes the sort of style statement that requires just the right occasion. Such a dramatic bag will never become part of your everyday wardrobe, but on the arm of someone with enough attitude it could look devastating.
