I'm a little thrown off by the name of this Melie Bianco handbag. In a list of other style choices like the Franny, Ramona, and the descriptive Croco Envelope Bag, this technical sounding S9-96 Shoulder Bag seems a little out of place. However, the design is synonymous with the brand's classic and often designer-inspired look.

There aren't many frills on this shoulder bag, but the simple details make it something worth considering. Pretty contrast stitching around the entire handbag accentuates the shape and adds a little visual interest. I'm not always a fan of light stitching against a darker background or vice versa, but it's a nice touch on the S9-96.

The classic tote shape has been ramped up a bit with panels of gathered fabric on the front and bag of the purse. It's no shock that the material is not real leather since this shoulder bag only retails for $90, but the trendy lilac purple is enough of a stand-out to make up for the faux fabric. The fun satin polka dot lining, a signature twist from Melie Bianco, adds a little extra personality to the S9-96.

Melie Bianco has a special knack for creating on-trend handbags that don't cost the earth. While the label has been known to "borrow" inspiration from Jimmy Choo and Valentino, it's just as capable of coming up with must-have fashion items all its own. The Franny is this season's head-turner.

The $84.99 price tag won't buy you genuine leather, but the synthetic alternative is much softer than many other manmade skins. Open up the top zip to reveal an enormous space lined with Melie Bianco's playful polka dot lining. Such an expansive interior probably needs a little more than the obligatory single zippered pocket and two gadget slips provided, but I suppose we're lucky we get that! At least the Franny comes with an extra long shoulder strap for days at the mall or lengthy commutes.

While the Franny is a brand new addition to the fashion landscape, it's already destined to be huge. People Style and W magazines have already profiled the purse, so it won't be long before we'll see it on the arms of budget-conscious fashionistas everywhere. At least with four colors to choose from, everyone won't look exactly the same!

Jimmy Choo gives the hobo a little rock and roll edge with the Rania.

The punk attitude comes from two rows of gleaming grommets that embellish the top of the bag. They've become somewhat of a Jimmy Choo trademark, utilized in iconic bags like the Ramona, Riki, and Rio. See them and you automatically think of the brand, without the presence of fussy logo plates or unsightly signature prints. It's a clever design touch, and one that will attract Jimmy Choo fans.

While those eyelets add edge, the Rania doesn't forget the hobo's roots. The relaxed spirit of the style comes through in the drummed leather. It looks casually worn and washed, and is sure to improve with age.  But conservative bagistas should note, this isn't the sleek calfskin we see so often. The weathered variations add character, but that personality won't suit everybody.

The unstructured shape is pure hobo; boho chic to be sure but not so practical. The functional limitations are heightened in a bag of this size, although its large dimensions are bound to please fans of the oversized trend.

Practicality can be easy to overlook, but price rarely is. In these days of belt tightening and penny pinching, the retail value of almost $2000 is likely to make most of us think twice about adding the Rania to our collection.

Whoa. Talk about sugar and spice and everything nice. That's what perfect purses are made of. The Jimmy Choo Riki in mauve patent leather is a little bit rock-n-roll, a little bit girly, and a lot stylish. Sometimes it's hard to pull off the oversized bag trend without looking sloppy, but bags like Jimmy Choo's Ramona simplify the size by keeping it structured and interesting. The 16" x 11" x 6" size is great for toting all your take everywhere items, although since there is no zipper at the top, you might not want to pack it all in there.

I love the huge goldtone eyelets laced through with leather that give the Ramona its drawstring effect. The main compartment closes with a simple strap with gold logo closure. Ordinarily, I don't love huge logo plates, but the closure on this bag is so simple and well designed that it doesn't detract from the bag at all. In fact, I think its center placement draws interest in an elegant way.

The double straps are thick and would be comfortable held by hand or work over the shoulder. The soft leather exterior opens onto an even softer moleskin suede interior, accented by an interior logo plate. Since I think the only serious drawback of the bag is the mostly open top, I really like that there is an interior zipper pocket and two patch pockets to keep your things in place and organized.

At about $2,800 retail, the Ramona is a pretty hefty investment, but one that might be worthwhile for a woman with edgy taste looking to add a little dash of class to her wardrobe.
