Burberry is a label that, honestly, I sort of thought of as a one-trick pony until a few years ago. Its one trick being the trench, of course. In the past couple years, though, the line has really stepped up its fashion game. And Prorsum has taken it one step further with its own take on edgy, hip classics.

This laser cut suede hobo walks a fine line between modern and classic, and one I'd like to see Burberry keep walking. It's not the most exciting, edgy hobo I've ever seen, but it's not supposed to be. It would be equally at home on the arm of a society dame or the wife of a rockstar.

The rich color of the sumptuous suede is very of the moment. They call it burgundy, but I'd say aubergine. However you say it, it's a great dark neutral that will work with a lot of color palettes, both warm and cool, and is a great take on this season's not-quite-black darks.

The shape strikes a fab balance between structured and slouchy. I hate the way an overly slouchy hobo just collapses when you put it down, but that won't happen with this baby. It's got just enough to hold itself up. The band, strap, and buckle detail along the top adds a bit of edginess, but the rolled leather handle keeps it classy.

I really like this hobo, but for $1,495, I want something to have a little more punch, or to be the kind of thing that lasts a lifetime. And while the style of this hobo might stand the test of time, the suede probably won't.

All experienced handbag fans will know that to purchase a purse with an original and unique design, you have to spend a reasonable amount of money. After all, even if you do manage to get a bargain piece with high style levels, it will likely have broken by the time the next party season rocks around.

This glossy black patent clutch from Kenneth Jay Lane features just the sort of unexpected, quirky and utterly desirable shape that handbag shoppers spend so much time search for.

In a strangely teardrop silhouette with a flat and blunt top, this evening bag with its long strap catches attention easily. It isn't jam-packed it with features either (so no multiple outer pockets, I am afraid), so the good looks are down to the flat black leather and nothing else. It is nice to see someone who doesn't try and overload their product with bits and pieces, instead leaving the artwork to speak for itself.

That said, the wonderful clean elegant lines of this compact purse are spoilt somewhat when using the optional cross body shoulder strap, which clings the design to your body and looks rather strange. Functional, perhaps, but I wouldn't choose to use this feature. Instead, I would keep it as a clutch, holding onto the retro flat handles and letting the diamante clasp do the introductions for me. This is great, as long as people don't look to close and realize that, oddly, the clasp is shaped like a little animal!

The Love Candela could only come from one fashion house. It has all the hallmarks of Gwen Stefani's style empire, L.A.M.B.

The velvet stripes which run down the center of the bag and around the base are a L.A.M.B trademark. Here tan signature print clashes with the soft red leather, giving the purse a color-blocked appearance. If you'd prefer a more unified look, the Love Candela is also available in black on black. A gold-plated "L" sitting proudly in the center of the stripe is another elegant pointer to the brand.

Inside the striped faille lining is highlighted with a smattering of gold letters. This is clearly a brand who knows what its fans want, and its more L.A.M.B. logos! Yet the label stops just short of obnoxious. The signature printed stripes are subtle. The logo plate is elegant. And the lining knows just how many letters is enough.

The Love Candela is a large bag, but I probably wouldn’t put it in the oversized category. The dimensions are generous though, so you’ll have no trouble carrying your favorite novel on the train or a wallet busting at the seams. Pockets of all kinds line the side walls, providing much needed organizational assistance.

The long handle makes it so easy to grab and go, which is just what busy girls need!

After much hype and industry buzz, we can finally feast our peepers on the new Chanel ads starring edgy pop princess Lily Allen. She's a self-confessed Chanel addict, but Lily's cheeky style was never a natural choice for the sleek fashion house.

Yet somehow it all works, with Lily's irreverent presence giving these ads a healthy dose of humor. Lily looks inspired by Audrey Hepburn circa Breakfast at Tiffany's with her diamond tiara, dark sunglasses, and sweeping up-do. But despite her vintage makeover, Lily is far from demure and her vivacious spirit shines through.

It's just as well, because the Coco Cocoon bag she carries is no ordinary Chanel purse. The reversible handbag is contemporary rather than classic, just like Lily herself!

I wasn't convinced when Lily was named the new face of Chanel, but now the results are in front of me I couldn’t be more pleased. Ms Allen may be just the girl to help the brand shake off the cobwebs!

If you're in the market for an edgy designer handbag, Botkier is the way to go. It's certainly not the only brand to offer rock-and-roll style in luxury fashion. However, it's at the top of my list for that particular blend, right along with popular label Treesje.

The Botkier Rio satchel is a prime example of why Botkier is one of the best. All of the handbag's details blend effortlessly to create a stylish design with a surprising amount of practicality.

In the patent black cherry version, the Rio is tinged with deep red on its pocket edges, tassels, and zippers. Just the hint of rich color is enough to catch your eye but not overwhelm the bag. 

That's not the only element to add edginess, though. The Rio's abundance of zippers does more for the vibe of the bag than any other detail. However, they are more than decorative. The angled zippers that continue from the front to the back actually expand the sides of the satchel for more give you more space.

If that's not enough of an unexpected convenience, Botkier also included a side flap pocket on either side of the bag. In any other color besides patent black cherry, the pockets might cause the bag to look a bit more like a diaper bag than a rockstar satchel. It's hardly noticeable and definitely practical in the dark color, though. This large designer satchel retails for $495.

It might have been a somewhat somber event, but Rihanna wasn't going to let that stop her from looking fabulous and chic. The singer showed up to a court hearing regarding the Chris Brown case on Monday in head-to-toe designer duds.

Besides styling a classic little black dress, Rihanna also showcased vintage Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccelatti gold and yellow diamond jewelry. Though the jewelry is admirable and enough to pay my mortgage for a ridiculous amount of months, the accessory that really has me drooling is the handbag she carried.

The pop star appeared in court carrying a Proenza Schouler PS1 bag in black python. The designer purse, which comes in many styles and textures, must have been the perfect classic accessory to her mature yet fashionable get-up.

Brown might have pleaded guilty to assault charges sentenced to probation and hard labor, but I'd say Rihanna won that day in more ways than one. I have no doubt that she was also the most stylish woman there.

Proenza Schouler Handbags on eBay 

With a heavy glance towards the Yves Saint Laurent Cage Clutch, I'm ready to declare the cage bag a bonafide trend. And, ever the masters of trend, ASOS have jumped on the bandwagon with their Metal Cutwork Clutch at right.

I really like the design of this piece, perhaps even better than that of the YSL, gasp! The rounded edges and oval silhouette are echoed in the curved design of the cagework in a really artistic way. While I'm sure the YSL is sturdier with a higher quality, I much prefer the design of this cheaper bag.

Inside the metal cage is a cotton-silk blend lining. I do wonder if a cell phone would bang around noisily in the cage given the that the lining likely isn't padded.

A silver affect chain shoulder strap makes this perfect for cocktail parties when you want to give your more formal frocks some edge, but it would also look really cool with jeans, heels and a "going out" top. I do wish the strap was constructed in such a way that it could be tucked inside when it wasn't needed - which probably would have been easy to do.

Former Jimmy Choo designer Jonathan Kelsey has joined forces with Belvedere vodka and British soul singer Estelle to develop the Belvie bag. The limited edition purse is tailor-made for all the divas out there with its gold accents and dramatic cross-stitching details.

Estelle has the rockstar cred to pull this look off, but I'm not sure us mere mortals would be so lucky. Those accents really pop against the white leather fabric, and there are so many of them. Barely a square inch has survived unscathed. A little gold can look elegant and rich, but here there's so much that it simply looks tacky.

If you're brave enough to carry this handbag, I suggest pairing it with neutrals like Estelle. It's a purse that demands to shine in the spotlight.

The $1,400 price tag seems a little exorbitant in this current financial climate, but the limited edition status is likely to inspire sales nonetheless. It's available at Jeffrey New York and at Belvedere Black Raspberry pop-up stores in New York and Los Angeles.

Looking for a luxe evening accessory to jazz up last year's formal gown? Start with this Yves Saint Laurent Satin Ribbon Clutch and it will hardly matter what else you're wearing. It may not exactly be cost-efficient, but it will add an of-the-moment piece to your look, whether you're going to a charity event or a wedding.

This is a statement bag that doesn't scream too loud. The black on black detailing keeps the look of criss-crossing satin and velvet ribbons subtle, with a proportionately large velvet bow providing the main decorative statement.

The bag is small, so it will look nice with shorter frocks but would perhaps get lost worn with a large, opulent gown.

In a classic box shape, the bag features gold-tone hardware (silver might have been chicer and more modern) and fastens with a black and gold clasp. There are two pockets inside, but I'm not sure what you could actually fit inside them other than a credit card and a lipstick.
