They might have more money than the rest of us, but even Hollywood style icons are tightening their designer belts in the financial crisis. Some of my favorite starlets shared their budget style tips at the recent New York Fashion Week.

Michelle Trachtenberg keeps her quirky style image by mixing pieces from budget retailers H&M and Target into her wardrobe. With designers like Hayden-Harnett and Devi Kroell creating cute accessories for Target, Michelle says even her teen fans can afford to follow her style.

"I have always kept in mind that my fans are teenagers and they don’t have a lot of money to spend. They like to get looks for less," she explained

Spending less is nothing new for 90210 star Jessica Stroup, who says she's "always been a bit frugal." She recommends looking out for sales and reinventing her old pieces. After all, yesterday's It bag is today's vintage statement!

Even heiress Nicky Hilton is getting more financially savvy.

"I'm being smarter about my spending. I'm not going into stores and buying anything. I am buying more pieces instead of just a bunch of clothes," she explained.

The Hermes Birkin, the Balenciaga Motorcycle, the Chloe Paddington, and the Fendi Spy all quickly gained It bag status, inspiring millions of fashionistas to spend up big on these must-have handbags.

But designer Anya Hindmarch isn't a fan of the It bag phenomenon, declaring these red-hot handbag trends to be "overheated and pretty disgusting."

"There was a point at which the queue of people waiting for one particular handbag - not necessarily one of ours - was ridiculously long, and then it's not even a luxury experience, it becomes a mass market," Anya explained.

"The whole thing was getting a bit revolting. I've always thought the really, really expensive bag, which then becomes completely unfashionable the next season, is a bit dishonest, and I think customers are more intelligent than that."

It might seem a little hypocritical for Anya to take potshots at It bags considering she creates luxury purses herself, but she insists this isn’t the case.

"Certainly we had bags some people called It Bags, but generally it's not what I stand for as a brand. What's important to me is lasting design, something you can hand onto your grandchildren."

Anya encourages women to buy just one handbag each year to treasure, rather than one every season. She even advocates recycling purses from years gone by!

It's good news for style lovers feeling the pinch of increasing petrol prices and rent rises. And Anya means what she says, after recently teaming up with Target for a line of affordable luxury accessories.
