For most people, travel almost inevitably accompanies the holidays. That's why every gal should have a reliable weekender-style handbag to carry with her on those unavoidable plane, train, or automobile trips.

Though not an enormous travel bag, the Jet Setter satchel is large enough for essentials or to use as a carry-on bag for plane trips. It's bigger than what most of us tote around for an everyday purse (except for women who adore the overly oversized bag trend, of course), but isn't so bulky that it becomes difficult to haul around an airport terminal.

There are several exterior pockets ideal for items you need to access at a moment's notice. The double handles might be expected for this style of handbag, but they're definitely too short for my practical taste. I'm guessing that the longer carrying strap is much more useful.

"Handbags have become the new statement accessories," said Katie Frayard, manager of Kiki. "Clothes are a backdrop for bags."

The fringe fad also hasn't faded, although moderation is key. Keep it soft and delicate unless you want to look like you've stepped from a rodeo.

Chain shoulder straps may not be practical, but they're right on trend. To protect your shoulders, look for handles with leather centers. And this season the longer the straps, the better. That's right ladies: cross body bags are back. I love when practicality and style work in harmony!

As the leaves change on the trees, so do the favored handbag hues. Purples and violets are big, as are reds and deep pinks. Blue fans should look to lapis and navy, while gray is an "interesting neutral."

It seems we may also have seen the last of the oversized handbags. While we still love it large, this season's purses aren't quite as overwhelming. Slouchy hobos are out and structured purses, including doctor's bags and satchels, are in.

That's a lot to take in, but Ms Frayard says it's not hard to stay current this season. Consider modern classics like the Marc Jacobs Stam bags and iconic Chanel purses. They have the quilted finishes and chain straps you need to stay at the forefront of fall fashions.

Sonia Kashuk's signature feminine style is on show again with this bold weekender cosmetic bag. But I worry that this time, the designer's gone too far.

The predominant pink and white paisley design is lovely, but it clashes with the stripes and spots that dot the top of the weekender, and all that shiny silver trim. There's plenty of space for storing everything you need on a weekend away, but the soft-sided construction will help out girls who feel the need to take everything they own. Accidental spills are no stress either. The polyester finish simply wipes clean with a damp cloth.

So perhaps this Sonia Kashuk is a purse that should be appreciated for its inner beauty, rather than its outer failings. For just $24.99, I'm sure this is one bag you could learn to love.

There something about 70's style that keeps up coming back for more. For the past few years, it's been all about the boho. Even the busy-printed maxi dress has made a reappearance. Plus, without a lot of bulk to weigh you down, you won't even have to put down your purse to dance if you happen to get a case of Saturday night fever.
