Ordinarily critics are the ones to saddle a handbag with the novelty tag. Here Tommy Hilfiger's done it for us! And who can blame it? The primary colors Tommy Hilfiger ordinarily chooses have been passed over for a lurid shade of pink. And I can't recall ever seeing a Tommy Hilfiger bag with a bow, can you?

I'm sure this tote will leave many of the label's fans scratching their heads, but I don't mind this bag one bit. It's bold and brave, and just as practical as any of Tommy Hilfiger's best accessories. Even the quilting can't make the nylon body seem rich, but it is more durable than most affordable fabrics. It's also large enough to hold anything we would want to carry and then some. It could use a few more pockets, and a more secure closure than the clasp, but these are minor niggles.

If the color offends you the affordable bottom line likely won't change your opinion. But girly girls won't mind shelling out $88 for this playful purse.

I haven't always warmed to Sun N' Sand's cheap and cheerful accessories, but this is one of its better designs. While it would look out of place on the High Street, its playful vibe is perfect for hitting the beach. I love the line of decorated flip flops, which seem to be waiting to head to the strip of coastline we see in the distance. The cute flip flop charm is a lovely tie-in to the image.

The print takes focus but the straps are also surprisingly pretty. The deep blue ruched fabric is a great complement to the side panels, and those coral colored loops at either end are very sweet. Almost as sweet as the striped fabric lining we see peeking out from the mid-sized interior!

Honestly I'd prefer more space than Sun N' Sand provides. Beach items tend to be bulky, like a thick towel, a pair of flip flops, and a hat. Throwing your towel over your shoulder would leave more space in the tote, but why should you have to?

At least the smallish dimensions come with a small price tag. $40 seems like good value for this pretty beach tote, don't you think?

The Maya tries very hard to appeal to bagistas. Its design takes its cues from Hermes, although it's a far cry from any Birkin bag. Its quilted leopard print panel sounded good in theory, but the execution is off. The too shiny synthetic trim only makes the spotted animal body seem tackier.

The Maya's generous dimensions are impressive, but they're about the only part of the main compartment we can get excited about. The trio of interior pockets goes some way towards keeping the space organized, but I feel like we've seen it all before. The synthetic that trims the pockets is a nice touch, but it's still not enough to woo me.

Frankly the Maya looks like the kind of accessory a cougar might carry while she's trying to find a rich young husband. Its $118 price tag is affordable, but I can think of plenty of better ways to spend that sort of cash.

On the surface it seems like so many other tote bags. We've seen its clean lines and classic shape so many times before that even the purple croc finish can't pique my interest. I was looking for a little flair, and I found it inside.

It's disappointing for a bag to keep its personality hidden away, but it's also sensible. The main compartment is spacious and organized with reinforced pockets. This extra support helps the Vineyard carry wine bottles and other heavy items.

The Vineyard's simple design makes it a bit pedestrian but also very versatile. It'll hold a pair of wine bottles for a relaxing barbecue lunch, or an iPad or laptop for a day at the office. Whatever you're toting it'll stay safe thanks to the sunken zippered closure.

The man-made material is a bit thin and plastic-like but it also keeps the price down to a mere $48. I don't mind a fabric compromise when we enjoy savings like that, do you?

This handbag looks opulent from a distance, but it's cleverly made to survive those harsh coastal conditions. Its natural woven straw body gives this tote a classic summer finish, but it's the python accents that make it really special.

We wouldn't dare take authentic snakeskin out in the salty sea air, so Roberto Cavalli has opted for the next best thing. Colored canvas is much more practical, and from a distance you'll barely notice the difference. The leather handles and nameplate aren't as appropriate for the shore, but they do provide the sort of luxury Roberto Cavalli fans love.

The python printed canvas is an inspired choice, so I'm glad to see more of it inside. There we find a cute snake patterned coin purse made of the same colored canvas and attached with a leather chain. I think the design would be more user-friendly if we could remove the pouch completely, but at least we never have to worry about losing it!

The open top design compromises security some, but at least we have that pouch for storing anything of value. Just make sure you have friends to keep an eye on it while you're enjoying the ocean.

On looks alone I'd say this tote is worth the $553 Roberto Cavalli commands. But remember, this is essentially a straw and canvas tote, with only a splash of authentic leather. It's overpriced, but if you're a real sun lover you may still see value.

This is the kind of handbag I don't mind spending the big bucks on. While my husband would never agree, I consider it an investment in a fashionable future rather than an attempt to follow trends. Its clean lines and classic design will never go out of vogue after all. However that blue leather gives it a bit of personality. It's a more unique shade than navy, but it's also not unusual enough to raise eyebrows.

The Atlantique's easy blend of modern and retro style influences suckered me in, but it's the practical design that keeps me interested. I love the way the two deep side pockets are incorporated into the design, and the generous dimensions. The rolled handles could stand to be a bit longer, but I admit they really suit the Atlantic's looks. Sometimes that commitment to style is more important than functionality.

The Atlantique is a serious investment at $1989, but if you treat it well you should enjoy many years of service from this beautiful blue tote.

There's no getting around it; this tote is enormous. Those sizable dimensions will either be its greatest asset or the feature that turns you off. The quintet of interior pockets and the selection of straps help the Knight wear its weight well, but it'll still feel bulky to most girls.

You can't hide a bag like this away, so Oryany Handbags doesn't even try. In fact, it's made it yellow. It's not a bright canary shade or a neon hue, but the goldfish color will still stand out in a sea of neutrals.

It seems like nitpicking to suggest that a bag with five pockets needs more, but some extras wouldn't have gone astray. With some clever design work Oryany could easily have converted those zipper accents to usable compartments. On a purse this size, we need all the organizational assistance we can get.

We're getting a lot of tote for our money, so $425 doesn't seem like a lot to spend on the Knight. It won't suit everyone, but pack rats will see real value here.

I really can't fault the exotic skins themselves. The earthy golden python is beautiful, and a lovely foil for the bolder black Caiman fuscus crocodile. But when the materials are all cut up into strips, they lose their value. Think of the way an allover python bag speaks to us with its delicate scales. It doesn't need any embellishment, because the material has enough to attract us. We don't get that instant impact here, because Nancy Gonzalez has tried to do too much. She's attempted to be clever, rather than using her prized skins to draw eyes.

This tote gets the job done, but it doesn't do any more than a cheap tote would. Its interior is spacious, but we're not treated to the pockets we need to make use of all that room. The bracelet handles are eye-catching but they're also not up to the challenge of carrying our cargo. We don't even get a closure, although perhaps if we buy a tote like this we won’t have any money for filling it!

Because at $2,950, this crocodile and python tote is a really expensive proposition. We wouldn't expect a bag made with such high-end materials to come any cheaper, but we'd also expect it to deliver more than this.

It's not all bad. The simple sketch of the grand Love Moschino manor is quite charming, especially with the pop of orange at its door. I also love the way Moschino has picked up the orange hue with the patent leather base. This hardy material is a smart choice, as it should last longer than canvas. However it's a shame Moschino hasn't protected it with any metal feet.

The spacious interior is better organized than your average canvas tote compartment, with a zippered envelope running down the center. There are also practical pockets in the side wall, which are trimmed with more patent leather to help them last.

While the splashes of leather help to justify the costs, it's a shame that they're hidden away. On the surface this just looks like so many canvas totes, and I think that's too ordinary to pay $210 for, don't you?
