With so many over-embellished, overdesigned handbags flooding the market, something as clean as the Robinson is like a breath of fresh air. I'm not one for obvious branding, but the abstract look of the double T medallion is a rich complement to the polished burgundy colored leather. The simple design ensures the Robinson will endure as trends come and go.

Tory Burch has created several different Robinsons, but I think this shoulder bag is the most practical. Its spacious but slim design offers all the space we need in a sophisticated package.

That elegance ensures the Robinson can easily work its way into your professional life without looking stuffy in your leisure time. Whatever the occasion or the season, I can imagine the Robinson being a great companion.

Its versatility makes the Robinson's relatively affordable $375 seem like even more of a bargain. Indulge in this bordeaux version or basic black.

Her vegan leather often appears cheap, and her designs uninspired. However she's ironed out the kinks with this Structured Shoulder Bag.

The blend of polyester and polyurethane is a better leather mimic than most of the materials Stella McCartney utilizes. She's used it well here to create a ladylike purse that's both retro, yet very modern. The structured design takes its cues from the fashions of yesteryear, but the golden chains on each side of the strap bring a bit of contemporary flair.

Stella McCartney's commitment to design hasn't stopped with the exterior though. The triple-compartment is one of the most user-friendly I've seen in some time. It should be a breeze to keep this baby organized, although those partitions mean it's not ideal for carrying thick novels or other bulky items.

True to form, Stella McCartney charges us a lot for her name. $1195 is exorbitant for a bag made from synthetic, but if your heart is set on a Stella McCartney original this is probably the one to spend your money on.

This is the kind of handbag that suits any occasion or situation. It doesn't make a strong style statement, but there's an elegant quietness about it that's really attractive. It might not turn as many heads as a more trend-focused accessory, but it will find a place in your wardrobe as fads come and go.

If you dismiss it as boring you'll miss its beautiful details. It's an old soul, but the triangular stitching around the straps makes it feel a bit more modern. The gleaming brass studs are also a gorgeous complement to the conservative brown leather. While the color is sedate its gentle glaze makes it much more compelling.

The Raphael is spacious but it stops short of being unwieldy. That's largely due to the unique design, which has not one but two compartments. Why not use one for the office and the other for fun after hours? The rolled handles are likely to slip from your shoulder, but at least they're long enough for easy carrying.

I haven't always been Sara Berman's biggest fan but she's gotten it right with the Raphael. At $653 it's a bit more expensive than her other bags, but it's also better than most.

The Dusk shoulder bag is a great example of the versatile and affordable accessories the label now offers.

The Dusk isn't a pioneer by any means, but it's a lovely homage to bohemian style. Its drawstring closure might be a bit fiddly to manage, but I love the way it gathers in the top, creating a soft, casual silhouette. Its long braided tie is also ideal for the Dusk's hippie-chic image. The merlot color won't change the world but it's a fresh alternative to brown or burgundy. It's somewhere in between the two more traditional hues, yet it feels more unusual than either one.

The Dusk's generous dimensions are perfect for holding most things we need, and probably a few extras besides. Such a slouchy shape is never easy to keep organized, but there's an array of interior pockets on hand to help us out. I also appreciate the long shoulder strap, which is perfect for grabbing as we're rushing out the door.

The Dusk is made from the sort of vinyl that will never pass for real leather. It's too thin, and a little too shiny. But that compromise helps Roxy price this shoulder bag at just $44. It won't have the longevity of a leather bag, but perhaps when it falls apart you can afford an upgrade!

This purse offers a brilliant take on traditional diamond quilting. Rather than neatly dividing the leather body into regular diamond shapes, the New Prismic's stitches create a futuristic faceted finish, something like the surface of a precious gemstone.

Roger Vivier allows the stitching to shine by keeping the rest of the New Prismic's styling simple. The basic flap-over design is something we've all seen many times before, but that faceted finish and the bold green color help us appreciate it through new eyes. The gleaming gold chain shoulder strap and logo are a gorgeous complement to that rich emerald hue.

The New Prismic's medium dimensions make it a very versatile creature, perfect for casual lunches or hitting the town. It doesn't take a lot to keep a space this size organized, but Roger Vivier isn't taking any chances. The trio of open pouches and generous zippered pocket exceed our expectations.

Frankly I can't fault this purse, which is exactly what I need if I'm ever going to spend $3330 on a bag. That's an awful lot of money, but there are worse things to indulge in!

The Holloway has a very proper look, with polished buckles and a structured shape. However the signature Scottie Dog charm gives the design just a splash of whimsy.

This handbag is a great medium size, which makes it perfect for everyday use. It's not big enough to weigh you down, but it should hold everything you really need. Just remember to utilize those side pockets for those items you need on hand.

The Holloway is available in a range of classic colors, that some may call boring. However black, hazelnut, and this rich brown called bitter chocolate, will always find a place in any wardrobe. That versatility and quality makes the Holloway great value at £179.

Nine West shows the other labels how colorblocking should look with this Fair & Square shoulder bag.

I appreciate that Nine West has kept the colorblocking simple here. A wide cream racing stripe runs down the center of the purse, effectively breaking up the pretty orchid colored patent material. That material is synthetic rather than real leather, but you'd barely know it. I've often criticized Nine West for choosing inferior man-made materials, but this glossy fabric is a cut above other synthetic alternatives.

I'm not such a fan of the tortoiseshell buckle though. It doesn't seem to gel with the patent leatherette, or the silver hardware. It adds interest to be sure, but I think it attracts eyeballs for all the wrong reasons.

That buckle is a fairly minor misstep though, and one we'll quickly forgive when we spy the price. At $69 this Fair & Square shoulder bag is an affordable way to add some pop to your wardrobe this winter.

If MCM's Sweet Visetos Valentine's Day collection was a little too obvious for your tastes, then Proenza Schouler's dreamy seasonal offering may be more your speed. The high end label has released a small capsule collection of red handbags to mark the most romantic day of the year.

The limited edition line features a small red leather PS1 wallet, an iguana version of the classic PS11 shoulder bag and leather and iguana versions of the large PS1 chain clutch. We've seen all these purses from Proenza Schouler before, but the new materials are helping me appreciate the designs all over again. The iguana lizard skin is particularly enticing, don't you think?

You'll need someone very smitten in your life if you hope to receive these babies on February 14 though. The small PS1 wallet costs $165, the large leather PS1 is priced at $785, the lizard alternative is $1925, and the lizard PS11 clocks in at a whopping $6825. That's an awful lot of money to spend on a Hallmark holiday!

We've criticized the label for being too lavish and too expensive, but we could rarely say it lacked class. So I'm surprised to see a very different side of the fashion house with this satin shoulder bag.

It's hard to believe it's the same Maddalena Marconi that created this bright pink monstrosity. It's like a weird modern take on tribal with its neon colored body and rainbow hued strap. I don't mind the beading or the overall treatment of the handle, but when paired with the iridescent pink it really seems too much. Thank goodness the bag's body is such a plain pouch shape!

This shoulder bag doesn't have the luxurious main compartment we see on so many other Maddalena Marconi handbags, but it does the trick. I like the way the sunken zip provides security without interrupting the already busy exterior. The patch pocket is a bit useless, but at least the space isn't large enough to warrant many organizational aids.

Honestly the best thing I can say about this Maddalena Marconi handbag is that it's cheap. At $248 it's a fraction of the money we'd spend on the label's high end clutches. Yet I can still think of several better ways to spend that sort of cash.

Taupe isn't a color I ordinarily fall for, but I love the way the colored cross design makes this fairly bland hue much more appealing. The criss-crossing swatches are interesting but not overly feminine which may work in our favor. This is one handbag that men won't mind holding while you're in the bathroom!

The long shoulder strap is adjustable, and extended right out you could wear the Brooklyn Jada across your body. Personally I think that carrying mode best suits the bag's casual vibe. Alternatively you can detach it altogether and use the Brooklyn Jada as a clutch. In my opinion it's a little big for that, but it's all a matter of personal preference.

The Brooklyn Jada's convertible nature is just the start of its practical appeal. Its divided interior makes its generous interior a little easier to manage. Its pockets aren't trimmed with leather as they are in more expensive bags, but at least they're all there ready to serve.

At $248 the Brooklyn Jada is very affordable for a bag with so much style and substance.
